We are importing data for a new store and for some of the products we are getting a "Product Currently Has Too Many Choices" error message when we attempt to edit the product choices through the admin area. Only happens on some products. We have two different drop down list choices, one for size that has 20 - 25 values and then color which just has four.
Does anyone have any details on what is causing this error?

There is a maximum limit of 100 product choice combinations for a product. However, there is not a limit on product modifiers.
The choice combination limit was primarily put in place to keep performance high and fast in the admin area when editing choices. Obviously this depends on the hosting environment. Shared hosting environments would likely see a higher degrade in performance than those with a dedicated box. You could probably bump this number up to 2 or 3 hundred without noticing a difference in performance though we wanted to have a precautionary limit in place.
If you’re not tracking inventory on each choice combination, I would recommend using product modifiers.
If you need to track inventory on each individual combination and you exceed the maximum limit, you can adjust this field in the WebAppSettings table in the database. I believe the name of the setting is “MaxVariantCombinations”. |
