I've been setting up my site on my local drive and things have been working well, but there are some advantages to now start working on it in a "live" environment, but I do not want to replace or add a sub-domain to our existing store until we're ready for final deployment.

So I would like to set it up using a differnet domain name on our dedicated server until we are ready and then transfer it over to our "real" domain when we launch. As far as deployment and license issues go, what are the best steps to take to accomplish setting up a development site on our live server?

Thanks

Joe

Joe,

All you need to do is set up a new IP (a.k.a Staging IP, Development IP, etc..) and load the BV5 version there. Finalize the entire site, have your host update their records to point the current domain name to the new IP address and you're good to go!

Thanks Matt,

Is there any reason you say to use a new "IP" -- why not a new "domain" name on the same server?

Joe, you can have a unique domain or simply add another host record to your DNS.

Like test.birdsafestore.com

I know if it were here on this network it would start getting indexed very quickly by google and MSN, and that can be a problem so it's usually better to keep it on the IP until you're ready. I'm not sure if Jess has any arrangements on the indexing, so it may not matter in this case.

Thanks Noah. That's one of my concerns is that the store gets indexed using a different domain and folks actually start shopping. Usually the sites on my server get picked up fairly quickly.
