Mailing List Signup... double opt-in / confirmation

Hi!
I'd like to be able to send an email confirmation when someone signs up for a mailing list, which is generally considered "best practice" as you can remind the user to mark your mail as legitimate or add them into your address.
Does anyone currently do this or know how to do that automatically?
