Hi there,
I see that BVC 5.0 is designed for SQL Server 2005.
My client prefers to stay on 2000 if possible. How difficult would it be to retrofit the database scripts to run for 2000? Are you using 2005 specific datatypes or other features or is it just that the scripts were built on a 2005 server?
I probably can still make the sale with 2005 only but they would be happier if we can make it work on 2000 without too much pain.
Thanks in advance! |

We use some SQL 2005 specific features for optimizing paging routines. Writing paging for large tables is a royal pain in SQL 2000 but is relatively easy in SQL 2005. While it could be done I wouldn't recommend back porting to SQL 2000.
Instead, get your client on SQL 2005 express which is free and only limited by the number of processors and max database size of 2GB. If your client exceeds the express edition they should be making enough to pay up for the full version.

*grins* I doubt they will exceed Express for this particular application, I think it is more an issue of them wanting to use their internal existing servers for it rather than having to buy/maintain a new one.
I will pass on the recommendation though, thanks for the quick reply! |

Check with Microsoft licensing. Most of the time when you have a database connected to a web site you need to be in SPLA monthly license program which gets you automatic upgrades to the latest versions of the software.
