SP 3.1 + All Versions Bug Line items in cart not passed back to product page

100% Verified in SP2 SP3 and SP3.1 clean installs, 1 product only in db.
Symptom: Items in cart that have product choices or modifiers are not editable. Customers clicking on an item in the cart are returned to the correct product page but without any attributes/modifiers/text the customer had previously selected. In short they end up confused and leave.
Cause: Occurs when custom urls are used by specifying a custom url on the product page. The cart works as desired without a custom url.
Seeing as most everyone uses custom urls this is effecting anyone using custom urls and having product choices, text areas, or product modifiers in all versions of BVC5.
This is a fairly serious usability flaw and although it's the holiday next week please get out a fix.

Coleen,
We will investigate the issue. Is this the same database that you have used for your existing site? You have previously reported a very large number of errors that are not affecting any other customers and I want to make sure that this isn't a merged or customized store of any kind.

Marcus, this is stock download on a separate box. Follow the exact instructions yourself and you'll get the exact error. Literally tonight I took a fresh download of Sp 3.1 created a sample store called sample31 with the new site manager tool, had it create a new db from scratch etc. It's a bug you'll be able to replicate.
We find more errors that are real bugs too FWIW. 10 to 1 when justin tested it was not with a custom url, it's the custom url involvement that causes the error.
I think the reason we find more is we're pretty comprehensive in following trends and have an existing strong customer base that provides input back to us rather than just leaving the site for good. In this case we'd watched what looked like random confused behavior maybe 7 times in two weeks. People would register for the site, add products and then go from the cart back to the product page they came from (which can really only mean they clicked ON the line item) and do this a few times before leaving. To us anyway, customers that register are likely not just window shoppers and aside of the few that had this exact issue all others have completed sales either online or offline. IE, we knew something wasn't right, didn't know what it might be.
I am not anywhere near your level technically but if it works without the custom url, but doesn't work with it (even the same product, delete the custom url WHILE a product is in the cart it works) tells me your code isn't passing the line id through the custom url code so it's losing the parameters.
I bet it's a quick fix. I'm really surprised that only Bob had noticed it previously but then again unless someone tells you it's a problem or you see a real pattern it's not something you'd go looking for. Also keep in mind regarding the bugs, we've got 3-4 people working 40-50 hours a week building the catalog in SP3. I doubt many others have that many people hammering away in SP3, so we're going to find more in SP3 than others. That benefits all of us I think and so far your response time has been excellent. With this bug we've given exact information so this should be an easy fix.
But to answer your question quickly.. this was a clean install. I'm sure you'll be able to replicate the problem.
UPDATE: All the other errors/bugs unless otherwise noted are verified on a clean install of a standalone Win XP (with all the latest patches) and SQL 2005 Express with all the latest patches. In essence it doesn't get posted here until we verify it in at least two spots.

Thanks Coleen. I just wanted to make sure that was on a clean build. We will investigate and work on a solution.

No problem Marcus. I have a hunch this is a real simple fix.

ETA on a fix would be really helpful, this is a significant issue.

C,
Am I correct that this only happens when you set a custom URL for the product? Our automatically generated URLs are working correctly?

Yes, auto generated urls are fine, if you go ahead and put a custom specified url on the product page and try to edit the card it doesn't pass the lineid backwards.
If you go in and delete the custom url while the item is in the cart you can immediately edit previously added items correctly...so the custom url is part of the problem. My guess is you aren't passing the lineid through the custom url engine.
