We're setting up our first cart and I have some really basic questions on getting the tax portion set up correctly.

First, from what I understand (i'm no accountant), my client only needs to collect sales tax if they ship to the same state that they have a physical presence in, correct?

When I try to set up a new tax rate in the options section, something doesn't seem right. When I select the State from the drop-down menu, shouldn't the page refresh and load all of the counties within that state? No matter what state I select, the drop-down menu for counties is empty (just displays "all counties").

Is there a way to import these rates from a file? If so, where are they available and how would I go about importing it? Is this something that is available as a plugin or external service?

Also, whatever information I could find on tax codes seems to want to use Jurisdiction code instead of Zip Code. How do you go about getting it into the cart with Jurisdiction codes instead of zip codes?

Sorry if all of this seems basic, but this is our first run through this process and it's a little overwhelming when you have no experience with it.

Client must be in New York? That is the only state I am aware of that requires charging tax by county.

But I think out of the box you cannot specify any lower than state level. And as you said zip codes don't really help you much.

Yes, the client is located in New York. I never realized this is the only state where this issue applies.

Can anyone offer any insight on how to get this done? I'm sure we have some people here that have set up shop in New York.

Thanks,

You need to manually add the counties or division for your state under Options->Countries in the admin side. As soon as you add counties to New York the tax screen will refresh as you expect it to and list the counties.
