Service packs will be released several times per year and include both features and bug fixes. You will also have access to a bug tracking database that will list issues discovered in specific versions of the software and provide hot fixes (if possible) that you can download to resolve the issue.
So, you can either wait for a full blown service pack or you can install hot fixes one at a time as needed. Once a new service pack has been released no more bug fixes will be released for earlier versions. The recommended practice is to install every service pack (or every other service pack if you want to go longer between releases).
Mitch,
PCI Compliance, loyalty points, additional/improved reports, documentation improvements and the release of unit tests for the source code are the top requested items so far from customers who have signed up for the maintenance plan. If you sign up (or have signed up) you will be able to tell us what items are to "your benefit" by voting for the items you feel are important.

Marcus,
I have no problem forking out the money for the maintence plan. Especially if it will include bv6 when it comes out. I am both a c# developer and also store owner, so i do all my own customization etc. So from a developers eyes, i completely understand. The more integration there is, the more code there is to maintain. And i will glady pay $500 a year not to have to deal with it.
Now with that said, being that i am paying for these new features and bug fixes, i absolutely expect more features to be added quicker. The design of your cart is phenominal, as i have told you before. Far better then anything i have worked with in the past. But I would like to you see catch up to other carts on features (IE layered navigation (filterable catories), HINT HINT) with BV5 and not make us wait for bv6. This shouldn't be too difficult as asp.net mvc will run side by side with web forms. So, you could theoretically write the layered navigation feature in c# mvc for BV5 and leverage the same code for bv 6 :) And with the maintenance plan, there is really no reason to hold back adding features to BV5 now as their really isn't a monetary incentive for you anymore to force an upgrade to bv6.
Having layered navigation is way more important to me then having bv being written in c# using mvc. Yeah, i would def prefer having bv written in c#, but its not going to make me any more money :)
Side Note:
Marcus, im not sure how your taking votes for features, but i purchased the plan the day after you released it. And if you havn't figure it out yet. My votes are going for layered navigation or filtered catories whatever you call them. Im getting ready to redo my online catalog, so this feature is critical as it will effect how i can organize stuff.

IceCactus,
Thanks for the feedback. The plan is to roll out new features for BV 5 and build them as unit testable libraries that will be used in BV 6 too. I've been doing a lot of refactoring lately to reduce dependencies and build a library of features for the much longer haul.
Yes, with the maintenance plan in place it makes much more sense to roll out features faster in service packs rather than wait for one monolithic release. That's the plan.
I haven't opened the voting section yet. I am taking feature requests via email at the moment and after the 12th I will open up the voting.

i think overall, as long as you hold true to releasing new features/bug fixes frequently, you will have much happpier customers.
