Can this be done without having to change the source? I need to have a category menu with a display mode that does not show peers. My home page would of course show all of the top level categories, but my product category pages need to have the left column that displays only categories & subcategories related to the current products displayed on the page. This is critical for a department store type web store.

thanks,

frank

I fixed that by changing the source code.
Check my site: http://www.bestgames.com.au and see if you like the way my categories are displayed.

If you do, I can send you the code if you want.

Corneliu,

Looks about right. I was going to change the source too, but my goal with BVC5 was to change as little source as possible.

Thanks,
frank

Yeah, but BVC5 is so wonderfully customizable. :-)

You don't actually have to touch the source, like in BVC 2004. Just build a custom content block, like the included Category Menu, that performs the way you want it to and drop it in the BVModules/ContentBlocks folder.

This is also an easy and convenient way to share code; just post a zip of your new content block when you think others might benefit.

Yes, it certainly is. And it's true, I didn't have to touch the source, I just had to add new source the way you mentioned. Took me several hours to get to familiarize myself with the new platform and do the actual coding, but it's pretty cool how much easier it is to develop.

Cliff... quick question. This module methodology that you are speaking of, are these normal .net principles?

I need a primer on how BVC5 works from a technical aspect. Although I have all of the files, I have no documentation on how any of it works. I am learning, but not quite as fast as I had hoped. There seems to be a lot of background info that I am missing.

No, this is a custom feature of BVC5, allowing you to create a module for pretty much anything - themes, checkout templates, category templates, product templates, rotators, navigation, etc. - drop them into the BVModules folders and switch them on and possibly edit their options in the admin.

For example, you can create a new product template module, then select that template for an individual product.

I think most developers will be able to look in the BVModules folder and see what's going on, since there are a lot of places to start and move code around. I don't know of any developer documentation at this point for modules, but I know Nick is constantly building docs so it may be in the works. At least get in there and start digging around, it'll make sense before long.

Digging is what I am doing. I am waiting for the light the shine. It's fun though. :)
