BUG: No alt tag displayed/available on "regular" images

There are no alt attributes displayed for small or medium images (the two standard images when a product is created). There is no place to enter this information, nor is it being displayed via programming.
Additional images via additional images panel do not have this problem as there is both a space for the caption and ALT tag. Seems like a serious oversight as I imagine this effects both SEO and access.
