SP1 Beta 2 Medium Images work when they feel like it?

Ugh.
Some times the medium images work, some times they don't. It's getting frustrating as I cannot figure out why this is happening.
The image displays fine in the admin, just won't show on the product pages.

I guess I'm totally lost. What's happening now is:
I have a product available in a single color. There are several drop down options that do not modify price, a few that do. With inventory disabled it's creating all sorts of variants with amended sku's. It's then pulling up the "improved" title it's pulling out of the sky by adding the option to the end of it, and not displaying the medium image because it's looking for me to provide one for each modified product. Product1-A, Product1-B, Product1-C? This is useless, if I'm selling one product and that is all that I care about, why I am I being forced to reload images over and over again and amending titles, and selling variant skus when I don't want that? All I want to be able to do is add $2 for rush shipping!

Hey Scott. If you have a medium image selected before creating the choices, then it should copy it over for you. Otherwise you'd have to go back in and add it.
You could also use a product modifier which does not have an image property (with the exception of the image radio button list). |

I guess I don't understand the concept. Why would it be tracking these things if inventory is disabled? In froogle if my customer is searching for product 12345-0 they won't find it, they'll now only find 12345-0A and 12345-0B? because of the fact that I want to charge an extra buck for fast shipping?
I just went in and created a dummy product. The product had one drop down list that just changed color. I added a product modifier for expedited processing, now I have multiple variants of each product complete with unique skus.
EDIT: If you need to maintain unique and definable skus I can't see how you can use the product choices. I really liked the feature that provided the color changes/image change based on choice but at least in my case it's not going to work. Hopefully in future releases or SPs there's a simple image/color selector like others are using that aren't tied to inventories/skus. IE, a simple image map "choice" that rotates the medium image on selection.
Not a huge deal, but it's a change I think from 2004 that I didn't understand fully.

I've been playing around with this in trying to do some manual uploads into google base. This presents a significant problem if the merchant wants the customer to be able to search in frooge/google et al for specific industry part numbers. Particularly for any distributor I can see this being a major headache.
The workaround seems to be to just use the product modifier choices without the price modifiers as needed. This makes it impossible to use some of the neat features of the anthem callbacks. Perhaps in the future integration with some of the componentart.com controls could be considered?
I can see that it's neccessary to have part numbers for modifiers if a merchant enables inventory, I was just hoping to be able to use the color image changer "on the fly" which is impossible now unless you want too also have multiple skus for each modified color/size/combo.

Currently the switching of the image on the product page is tied heavily into the product choices architecture. In the future we will consider having the ability to switch out the image, title, etc... based on product modifiers. |

Justin, I'm not sure the best way to handle it other than a set of secondary product choice controls for those not using inventory. Perhaps it's coded so that it's only visible if inventory is disabled.
Another possibility would be a secondary SKU that is an internal part number versus external. That would actually resolve the issue thinking about it. You'd want to give the user the ability of which one to display and ultimately any feed developer would want to do the same. IE, for internal purposes the skew may be product 8000-01A, 8000-01B, but the feed would only show 8000-01 to match what users are searching for on Googlebase et al.
Lost is the fact that the image still isn't displaying. It's there on the admin page, but is not appearing on the site pages even with the product choices removed.

When you say that they work sometimes, and other times they don't, are you saying that they work on some products and not on others, or that they work on a particular product only part of the time? Also, are these local or remote image references? Third, can you paste an example of what you are using as an image path? |

Justin it's related to the product choices creating alternate skus. Even if a product choice is eliminated and only modifiers are selected the product still wants to use the choice image. The only way around it is to delete the product and re-enter it.
It's just a fundamental change from the last version in how it handles items, it can be worked around by not using choices at all.
