If i wanted to create my own navigation for my store that automatically expands when going into a sub-category, is the asp.net treeview component the best to use or is there something else i should be looking at? NB question for sure ;)

The asp.net treeview control uses lots of table tags by default. It is very "heavy" on the page and that's why we didn't use it. Now that there are CSS control adapters for the builtin controls it might be okay.

Ive been trying to install the css adpaters on my box but i keep on getting an error... stupid windows error reporting ;)

this goes hand in hand with the CSS Friendly Adapters... it works pretty nice. asp.net 2.0 is pretty cool when digging around in this stuff. (atleast from a NB standpoint)
