Steps to reproduce this bug (at least on my site).
1. Go to Catalog - Catagories tab. Create Catagories and Sub Catagories. Do a couple of them each. 2. Notice that when you navigate back and forth from Catagories and Sub Catagories everything works perfectly. 3. Now Click on the Content - Custom Pages tab. 4. From here go back to the Catalog - Catagories tab. 5. Pick a Catagory with Sub Catagories. Then click on the View Sub Catagories.
Like magic, the Sub Catorgies disappear. But, like magic, its an illusion. They are still there, you just cant see them.
Took me a week to figure out what I was doing to reproduce it. Tried it in the daylight, got it in 5 min.

Addendum: Ok check that. It is a little more subtle bug then I just reported. When you go back the the Catalog - Catagories tab in step 5, you must first select a catagory on the second page of the list to view. Viewing a Sub Catagory on the first page, fixes it.

I don't know what it is any more but it is definetly a second page effect. It may have something to do with clicking on the root link above the catagorie list as well.
You don't have to hit the browser back arrow to see reproduce it. One other thought. I'm using Firefox.
