The search feature of this forum is throwing an SQL error so I'm not able to search for what I remember being discussed but cannot find manually.

How do I prevent a product from showing EVERY category in the breadcrumb trail?

You can turn this off under Options > Display > Always Show All Categories On Product Pages: (In Breadcrumb Trail)

Yep, tried that, but it sometimes still ends up showing lots of category breadcrumbs.

I thought I did, I'll check again, I'm working on the cart today, so we'll see if they show up still.

Hi Angela.

I just tried this on my test store and it seemed to function properly.

In your "WebAppSetting" table, is the "SettingValue" for "AlwaysShowAllProductCategories" set to "0"?

Yes, it is set to 0, and I have unchecked that option in the Admin...

I am seeing more breadcrumbs once again.

Not tooo big of an issue for me at the moment. :)

Hey Angela.

Is this store on the net? If so, do you mind creating a support ticket and supplying the URL with admin information so we can take a look?

The issue here is that even if you uncheck that box, but then you go to a product without going through a category, then we will still display all categories that the product is in. For example, if you search for a product and then click into it, how do we know which breadcrumb trail to display? Perhaps we need an option so that the admin can tell it to display nothing when a product is accessed in this way?

Yeah, I was wondering how it would figure out which breadcrumb trail to use...

I've bought breadcrumb add-ons and they give choices like: shortest trail, longest trail, etc... I'm pretty sure Andy Miller could pipe in here, I believe I was using his... :)

Good morning Angela,

I don't want to toot my own horn (ha ha), but you described it exactly. By default, if you arrive at a product from off site (so it can not tell which category is appropriate) then it will display all the category trails. Some sites prefer this (jewelry sites in particular for some reason). But some sites only want one to show, so you can configure it to show the longest, shortest, first, or last category trail. Several people have asked for a way to display a specific category trail in this situation (i.e. just display the category trail with category xx).

This has worked out well, and BV is welcome to use these ideas in their product. (They are even if I don't say so...I'm just clearing the air).

Andy are you saying that you have come up with a solution to only show 1 category trail? If so, where can I find/buy this solution?

Hello Jesse,

It is for a different ecommerce package...not BVC2004 or BVC5.

The options the others mentioned would be nice. Right now if a product is a member of six categories the entire site is shifted south to make room for the stack of trails. Is there any way at this point to get it to just display the shortest trail?

I like the breadcrumbs displayed but here is an extreme example of why this doesn't always work. It would be nice to somehow limit the number. Thanks.

We will look into ways to limit the number, we currently have the ability to only display the current category, but when you come to a page without going through a category then we don't really know what to display. We will see about adding something to limit the length.
