We went live with our site about 5 days ago. We dont get a lot of orders this time of year. But about half of our orders came through with a duplicate blank order (no product). The blank orders are coming right after the real order and from the same customer. But not every customer. We are using one page check out and allowing zero dollar purchases.
Here is what I think is happening. After the customer places their order, the little pop up box pops up telling them they are leaving a secure area and they assume if they check yes, all their credit card information will be available to the whole world. So they click no, and hit the place order button again. Because the order has already been placed, BV5 pulls all the product out of the oder to avoid duplicate orders (Thank You!).
If this is indeed the case, you may want to leave the customer in the secure socket when he views his order after hiting the placing the order button. Then have them leave the secure area when they try to leave the copy of their order page.
If this is a theme issue, we are using TecGear Redux. If not and BV stays in the SSL through the order completed page, then I dont whats happening. I'll try to get more information.

Sometimes they click the "place order" button multiple times. One of the reasons might be as you've suggested, fear of insecure transmission. But for me, I tracked it to the "process new order" workflow. That workflow includes two emails that need to be sent before it goes to the receipt page. It was taking my servers 15 seconds to complete these emails. I have no idea where the bottleneck is, but I cut out the smtp authentication (had to whitelist the webserver's IP on the smtp server). That cut the workflow to 8 seconds. I ended up with less of the blank orders.
Finally, I just added a step to the Process New Order workflow. The first step is now Apply Minimum Order Amount, and I've entered a penny for that check. On error (if they double-click the place order button while waiting), I set it to state a friendly "Thank you for your order. You should receive an email shortly." No more blanks. HTH
