If I was to be looking to custom build some of my own extensions, for example, adding an integration into shopping feeds (basically just needs to query the db, create a flat file, and ftp that file) do I need to get the developer edition? Would this require re-compilation?
If I start off with the basic version then find that I need the developer one, can I "upgrade" to that version?
Thanks.

You probably would not need to have the developer edition in order to do this. But this extension would have to be its own separate application. You could either query your products out of the database manually, or you could use the web services. Both of which can be done with the standard edition. |

No, this would not require the full source code edition. You can query the database and add your own code with the standard edition. We have a free Froogle Feed add-on available which you could use as a framework to build other feeds.
