I have a little confusion when looking at workflows. Maybe someone has some thoughts that will clear this all up for me.

How can I determine (short of reverse engineering) what a workflow step does?

For example, there is a workflow step in the "New Order Process" that is called "Make Placed Order". The name is only slightly helpful? What is a "placed order"? What exactly happens in this step?

"Update Order" is another one that I see sprinkled around, but I'm not sure what it does exactly.

Is there any documentation on the purpose of each of the individual steps?

"Make Placed Order" sets a flag on the order that changes it from a shopping cart to a received order.

"Update Order" calls the "Update" method on the current order which saves all the changes from previous steps.
