Hello,

I have a client looking to buy BVCommerce 5. They are going to do credit card processing locally. We read that in BV2004 CVV codes are not stored but sent to real time credit card processors. Is this the same case for BV5? Or is the CVV code stored somewhere? It looked like a limitation from Visa and Mastercard.

Thanks!

Joe

Yes, BV Commerce 5 works the same way to stay in compliance with Visa/Mastercard security rules. You are not allowed to save/store the CVV code or print it out anywhere that might be linked to the customer and/or their information.

Hello,

How does this work when you process credit cards manually off line. Is it visible when reviewing an order? I currently copy and paste the order (or download a file in the future) into an application that then automatically transfers the information, including the CVV codes into Quickbooks and shipping information into Endicia.

Thanks,

Bob

No, CVV codes are not visible at all. If you process cards offline you will need to call customers to get the numbers. I realize this isn't very efficient for merchants or customers but it's a requirement that the credit card companies have created.

I would highly recommend using an online realtime processor if you're going to accept orders over the internet.

Or process the card without the CCV number and pay the additional fee.

Hello everyone,

I ended up implementing this for our customer. If any clients are interested, feel free to let me know.

Hi Joe,

With all sincerity, I suggest you review your client's CC agreements.

Thanks Matt. I was definitely skeptical of doing it. Joe

CVV is to be checked and dropped during authorization at checkout. It can NEVER be stored, encrypted or not. For a merchant to store this code so that they can save a few cents on an manual transaction is criminal.

Call me crass, but I don't understand why in pluperfect hell anyone would actually advertise a CVV2 storage mod, especially if skeptical. Way to make me nervous about shopping at BV-powered stores I'm unfamiliar with.

Joe, if you don't mind, what site was it implemented on. We tend to buy a lot inside the community and would prefer to skip this one if possible.

Some merchants are going to ask you guys to do a lot of stuff that kind of moves into the gray areas. Here is a trick I use to use when I was doing accounting and taxes for small businesses.

It told my customers we are going to do this right. I said yes, I can help you cheat on your income taxes, but the minimum fine is about $2000 per occurrence and some jail time. You are not paying me enough for that. And besides, if I can show you how to cheat the government, and I can, I could also be taking money from your business. Is that the kind of person you working for you?

I had them believing I (or any accountant) could skim money out of their cash drawer without ever being in their store or having access to their checking account. All of a sudden they started reconciling their cash drawer every night.

Or you could always go with the less dramatic short answer.

1. I can't, it's illegal.
2. The software doesn't allow that function because its illegal.
3. Don't worry about it. You can deduct it on your Income Taxes. Most people would forgo income to keep the Government from getting some of it. I really never did understand that logic.
