Does the tax class by county work??

When I select CA - the state I need the county option in - there is no population in the drop down list...

Please, please, please tell me I'm not going to have to enter 2000+ ZIP codes again :(

Lie to me even ;)

Thanks

Ryan

Ryan,

To use tax by county you need to enter all the counties yourself. We are working with several tax processing companies to offer automatic tax calculation and reporting in a free upgrade to BV Commerce 5. We'll have more information in a few weeks. The tax processing service will bypass the BV settings in favor of guaranteed accurate rates for the entire US.

Do I need some backend custom coding for that?

I.E.> County = BETWEEN ZIP1 & ZIP2

Or is there an interface in BV to add them?

Thanks

The interface is built in under the country/regions where you can define the counties. The tax rate is then added in the tax rate section. No coding required.

Now that's sweet...., Internet taxation is right around the corner too!! It's more then likely going to be a necessity soon.

I see the interface to add the county, but how does BV define what that ZIP's fall under that county? Where is the lookup, as my clients are entering a ZIP code to define their shipping/taxes and not a county.

I could define between absolute values of ZIP's in some counties, like San Diego for instance - 92199 < San Diego > 91901.

However, LA County is more like - 93599 < LA > 90001, but NOT 90620-90633, 90680, 90720-90721, etc...

How do I accomplish this...?

Thanks
Ryan

You can still charge taxes by zip code, which is a lot of entries. If you use the by county taxes, customers choose their county when they checkout or they define an address.

I have written a custom interface to assign geocodes for Vertex and to call the Vertex system to determine taxes. Right now it is based on order totals, but I need to implement a new version that taxes by line item.

What I did:

Replaced the region codes table data using the Geocode state numbers as the bvin.

Filled the County table using the counties from the Vertex table. The bvin is the state # and county number concatonated.

In the checkout, I send the zip, county, state, and city to a process to check them and assign the geocode (I added this to the address class.) It also seemed to work better with the "bv2004" checkout where the customer is presented with multiple pages rather than the all on one page.

I updated the taxes class to make a call to the Vertex system for the rate in the same manner the invoicing system on the back end calculates the rate.

I then have a workflow to copy the order off to either the AS/400 or Sybase legacy order entry systems where it acts like any other company order.

While having a free service will be nice for some, I have to determine the taxes in the same manner as our back end process so that the customer is not invoiced for tax differences.
