I've created quite a few bvc2004 stores, and am hoping to build my first bvc5 store for a client soon.
One criterion that this potential client is stuck on though, is the ability to do a bulk update of the inventory levels. He wants to be able to, once a day, upload his brick-and-mortar store's inventory level up to the online store.
I installed and tried out the Import / Export Tool (on a demo store), thinking that might do it. However, there is only a field for turning Inventory Tracking on or off, but not an actual inventory-level field.
Is there another way to do this that I just don't know about?

If you can talk them into using Quick Books your problem may be solved. http://forums.bvcommerce.com/de...lt.aspx?f=44&m=46088Bob Noble

Thanks for the tip! They already run QuickBook POS at their store, so they'd probably want the QB POS add-on for it anyway: http://www.bvsoftware.com/store/Products/Connector-for-QuickBooks-POS__CNQBPOS1.aspx. Which leads to a question about how the Quickbooks POS add-on synchs the inventory levels. Does it just upload the POS inventory levels to BVC? Or does it actually synch the POS inventory level with the BVC level? For example, if Widget01 has a POS inventory of 5, but BVC sold 1 Widget01 since the last sych, will the POS and BVC inventory levels both be set to 4?

Kevin,
THe POS tool sends inventory levels from POS to the store. As order come in through the store the BV inventory is reduced. When you export orders from the store into POS the inventory is reduce in POS and should match the store. If you receive new inventory in POS you need to click the button to send the new updated levels back to the store.

How does it handle this example scenario:
Let's say in both systems you had inventory 5 of a widget.
Online, you sold 2, in the store, you sold 2 (or maybe even one was returned and restocked). So when you sync, both have inventory of 3, but in reality you only have 1. I'm assuming this kind of tool actually "plays back" each transaction instead of just syncing the number - correct?

To Start you have this:
QB = 5 Store A = 5 Store B = 5
ACTION - You sell 2 from Store A and 1 from STore B and 2 in the store (one was returned to the store).
At this point you have these inventory levels
QB = 4 (sold 2 and one return) Store A = 3 (sold 2) Store B = 4 (sold 1)
ACTION - Run QB Export Tool to send Orders from Store A to QB
Result
QB = 2 (was 4 but recorded 2 sales from Store A) Store A = 3 (orders were exported but not synched yet) Store B = 4 (same as previous step)
ACTION - Run QB Export Tool to send Order From Store B to QB
Result
QB = 1 (was 2 but recorded one sale From Store B) Store A = 3 (same as previous step) Store B = 4 (orders were exported but not synched yet)
ACTION - Send Inventory From QB to Both Stores
Result
QB = 1 Store A = 1 Store B = 1

Great, thanks for the detailed reply Marcus. I assume then it won't be a problem to have a negative inventory in BV? There may be situations where a sync happens after you've oversold (which is ok with me) a product....

Negative inventory is fine if you configure your product(s) as "Ignore Inventory" or "Show as Out of Stock but still allow orders"
