If you have an item marked as "Show as Out of Stock (Allow Orders) -- shouldn't it somewhere tell folks that it is not in stock, that it is on backorder before they checkout? Nothing is displayed, it's as if it is IN STOCK -- or am I overlooking something. I see there is a Site Term for this, but it is not being applied.

Joe you are right. It was brought up in the sp2 beta here but I don't think it was ever fixed. I may be wrong about that, but if it was fixed I have no idea how to activate it. Maybe a fix will make it out in the next patch release.

Here is an idea for maybe SP3 and backorders.

Handling backorders on a site can be a general pain. One site I work with was having some real issues doing so.
So, what we did is build an inventory notification system. If an item is out of stock the customer can signup to be notified.
The application runs a thread every 30 minutes checking inventory. If item is back in stock the customer gets and email. If the item has been discountinued the customer gets an email. Other opprotunities are getting new email list signups and maybe offering a discount if they order something else today.

If you have a minute check out what I have done here. I think this would be a good feature and fairly simple to do with Athem.

While on a product detail page the backorder warning now appears if an item is out of stock -- what about on a Category page? If you have a category set to "Detailed List" -- customers are allowed to Add to Cart from that page, and there is no indication that an item is out of stock or that you are in a Backorder Situation -- or when you are taken to the Shopping Cart page, the customer would still think the items are available.

Not sure if this is a "bug" -- but something needs to tell the customer both on the Detailed List page AND the Shopping Cart Page if the item(s) are not available.
