Having a little trouble finding the threads via the forum's search function.

Preferred Setup:

Auto Rewrite Products

Manually Rewrite Categories

1. I check "Auto URL Rewriting For Product"

2. I leave prefix blank

Check the site and it rewrites the product name, however I get this:

[color=#0000ff>http://example-auto-rewritten-url-name.aspx/</FONT>

No]

Attempt 2:

1. I check "Auto URL Rewriting For Product"

2. I enter "/" for the prefix

Check the site and it rewrites the product name, however I get this:

http:///example-auto-rewritten-url-name.aspx/

No base URL and a third / is added. it was a shot at least....

Attempt 3:

1. I check "Auto URL Rewriting For Product"

2. I enter the IP for the prefix

Check the site and it rewrites the product name, however I get this:

[color=#0000ff>http://IP/IP/example-auto-rewritten-url-name.aspx/

The]

Attempt 4:

1. I check "Auto URL Rewriting For Product"

2. I enter "Products" for the prefix

Check the site and it rewrites the product name, and I get this:

http://IP/products/example-auto-rewritten-url-name.aspx/

The IP Address is added, prefix "Products" is added, and all works great. Except, that's not what I want!!! :(

I want it to be <FONT color=#0000ff>http://www.domain.com/example-auto-rewritten-url-name.aspx/ for ulterior reasons.

--------------

So I guess I'm asking, how do I get it to work my perferred way?

One more thing....LOL...When the product gets rewritten, I'm not a fan of the SKU appended at the end as well as spaces getting replaced with dashes but existing dashes not being removed.

"Example Product Name - Blue" gets rewritten to:

Example-Product-Name---Blue.aspx (3 dashes)

When I prefer it to be:

Example-Product-Name-Blue.aspx (1 dash)

If you're still with me on this ramble...any pointers as to where the Rewriter needs to be modified?

Should I submit this as a support ticket?

For Problem 1, to do what you want, simply put "." for the prefix.

As for the second issue, the reason why the sku exists is that it is much more efficient to query the database on an indexed table. By providing the sku in the url, the rewriting engine has a way of retrieving using an indexed key to perform the database lookup. While it would have been possible to create the rewriting engine using only the product names, it would cause the software to function at a much much slower pace as with each database lookup it would have to fully compare the entire decoded product name.
