In going through my settings, Options - License -- it says my license expires on 9/6/2007 -- I'm not sure why it would expire, but what happens, if anything, on 9/6/2007? And do I need to change this somehow?

Hello Joe.

Log into your account at our online store and re-download your license file. Install this license file.

If you have any trouble, open a support ticket.

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem, but trying what Nick said did not help. I submitted a support ticket, and the response I got was that I'll receive a license expiration warning message 2 months prior to the expiration date that will display on the admin dashboard. At that time I must log into the BV store and re-download an auto-updated license file. That's ridiculous! We build sites for our clients and don't want them freaking out when they see a message like that. It also makes more work for us down the road. There has to be a better way to handle this.

Unfortunately the credit card companies offer very little protection for chargebacks on electronic purchases. We were faced with the choice to either require every customer to fax in a copy of their card and signature before delivering the software OR to issue temporary licenses and then permanent licenses later.

We're always open to suggestions on how to improve the customer experience. Please let us know if you have any ideas on how we could improve this process.

Marcus,

Can you use the BV RSS feed to send a custom message to a particular store that the license needs attention?

Hey Joe,

We cannot do this because of the nature of RSS. We would essentially have to make a separate feed for each store, and well, that would be a lot!

Thanks,

Couldn't you implement some kind programmtic "dongle" for lack of a better word? I'm thinking of something like implementing a web service that is used to verify whether a license key is still valid.

Hi Aaron,

I think your suggestion has merit, but it would need to be developed in a way that was completely tamper proof. Essentially, if you hooked up your sites license status to a web service, a good hacked could possible come along and disable the store. Personally I think it is most secure to build licensing into the products core where no one can tamper with it. There are inconveniences that come with this, but there is also a great deal of assurance as well.

Thanks,
Everett Comstock

Please don't. I'd rather download a new license file than run a store that has to 'call home' to work.

Licensing and compliance are very complicated issues when it comes to software. What every you guys come up with, I hope it is a better solution then Microsoft's.

The only change I can think of is maybe you chould change the name of first year's license. Make the first year a Temporary License. Or maybe even a Learner's Permit (God Knows I needed one). You could give them free access to this forum for a year to help them meet the minimum requirements for the Permanent License.

Then instead of sending them a Notification "Your License is about to Expire!" you could send them one that says "Congratulations! You have met the Minimum Requirements for your Permanent License to BV5. You must download your new Permanent License before the Temporary expires on mm/dd/yyyy."

I agree with Cliff.
'Call home' is not good.

I like Bob's approach. Package the expiration reminder inside an invitation to continue to make use of the forum, a reminder about upgrades/patches, the opportunity to fill out a 'first-year user survey'.... etc. Store Front makes zero effort to reach out to clients - you could fall off the earth for all they care. Made for a cold, empty relationship.
