Good morning everyone.

We recently updated this site to BVC5. It started on SF5 went to BVC2 then BVC2004. The client has been with us for years now and is always fun to work with. He runs boutique type stores in the northeast that at the end of the day basically sells all things cool.

It has been a real marketing challenge over the years due to the large number of departments and relatively small product groupings in each. Add to that the general uniqueness of the products and cost and you start to see the dilemma. SEO has never been an issue (it's what we do) and he has ranked well for product specific lookups for years now, the challenge is when you get to the parent level cats which out on the street are commodity items (lights, t shirts, clothing, jewelry etc.).

Through the years his brand and sales have constantly climbed and we are starting to see exponential growth which is what prompted the migration at this time to be ready for the holidays.

We have several mods in there to get it done the way the client wanted and a few more to come (we're rebuilding the menu control we have to allow more flexibility etc.). The site design and optomization was done in-house and the Flash header was produced by John Rossey.

WARNING - Some adult content

Check it out, kick the tires around, tell us what you think and more importantly if you see something that isn't working.

Thanks,
Noah

Another visually stunning site. Kudos!

Of course, I had to look... I like the 18 yo warning "I agree" screen, but selecting the menu items in the footer by-passes this warning. Small observation...

I'd like the icons in the upper nav header to be selectable.. Home, Sign in, Your Account.... not a big thing, but I did click on the picture first.

The red product backgrounds that flip to yellow on hover in FF, don't in IE6.

Very nice.

Great colors! I love the Stuart dude on the home page... very cool. From what I can tell, the site seems well laid out and easy to navigate. Love the hover on the products in the grid... I'm gonna have to figure out how you did that. Is the additional images a custom, or an add-on? Loads quickly for me, overall site is well done. One thing I did notice is the mailing list text is difficult to see and I would lighten the fieldset text color in the contact forms, otherwise looks really good.

Good finds Mitch.

You know how those flippie hippie flash guys are - lol. We'll have it taken care of.

Wanita, as always, good feedback.

The additional images is home brewed based on the lightbox control and we are working on some more mods for it to work with attributes, swatches etc. If you only want the control just for standard BV images, use Arams SmartView. http://www.avecomgroup.com/Smartview-For-Bvc-5.html he has done a lot of work on the lightbox and it's a pretty easy install.

IE6 doesn't support :hover on non-link elements, unfortunately. The best way to make it work across the board is to add some javascript into the mix. Or, even better, to get people to upgrade. :)

I'm using the following conditional comments on www.promotionsickness.com right now in an experiment to encourage IE6 (and earlier) users to upgrade. Feel free to improve upon it:

Code:
<!--[if lte IE 6]>
<span class="topred"><small><em>Achtung!</em> Your interweb experience would be so much better if you upgraded to
        <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx" title="Upgrade to Internet Explorer 7">
        Internet Explorer 7</a> or found a <a href="http://browsehappy.com" title="Find a better browser at BrowseHappy.com">
        happier browser</a>.</small></span>
<![endif]-->

My styling is a bit in-your-face, but in a store environment it could be styled as a subtle reminder that new browsers exist and should be taken advantage of, if only to make shopping a better, safer experience.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I wish everyone out there surfing the web would upgrade their browsers also. They are missing some of the full capabilities of the web. I hate too add to much javascript into web sites these days. Here at Resposio we like rocket fast sites and in my opinion adding client side scripting for prettiness is wrong. We as web developers need to push our clients and web users into the new technology, if anything to make web life more pleasant, enjoyable and of course profitable to our clients. Maybe we could write an ISAPI redirect to the microsoft.com/Updates page and brute force a browser upgrade :)

Hahah, no, that's what web standards were created to avoid. :)

Cliff, I love the Achtung.

Noah, is there a way to get the middle (repeating) section of ALL of the red/yellow bg's to be equal in number? Or perhaps clearer this time... There is a top, repeating middle section and a bottom to the curved-cornered boxes. The middle section repeats so the space under the product link is filled in and the number of repeats is driven by the size of the picture. Some repeat the middle section more than others - there's the problem.

The bottoms of the boxes as you scan across the rows is uneven. Is there a way to get all of the boxes to repeat the number of times that it takes to fill behind the biggest picture on the page?

It would leave some space beneath the smaller pictures, but all of the boxes would be even on all four sides.

Hi Mitch,

Ok, I think i get what you are talking about. The technique used for the background is called "the sliding door" technique. The background auto-adjusts based upon image/text variation height's and width's. This will accommodate for the varying height of images in the clients catalog, if they having different size images. Not a problem as more of a way with wrapping the image without having to resize every image in the catalog. If you see something that is out of alignment or does not look right please let us know.

Just wondering if the size of the largest graphic could be calculated in order to make each box the same size before the page was created.

Not a big deal, be a cool exersize.

Oh I completely understand what you are saying. I am pretty anal when it come to lining things up properly. You should see my desk. :) But sometimes owners/clients will choose what images they want to display not thinking of image size and placement and we code to accommodate for that. I will take a look at it and see what it entails. Thanks for the comments.

If only more browsers supported min-height, we'd be alright.

Looks pretty cool.

Lord of the Rings Chess Set (Collectibles) description is in all upper case. I didn't check them all but didn't notice any others.

Nice catch Bob.

One of the downsides that you guys all face when the estore employees come and go is a consistency in how things are done. We did a whole lot of cleaning during the migration.
