Product Search and extra categories/attributes...

Hi there,
We've just bought BVCommerce and are in the process of setting it up and I have a question!
All of our products in our database are assigned to categories, and at the moment (in our old system) each product is assigned extra attributes which marks the product as being suitable for a man, woman, child, boyfriend, wife, valentine's day, easter, birthdays, wedding, etc, etc and a customer can then tick a box or boxes and search for products based on price, recipient and or occasion. A product can be assigned to multiple searchable "areas".
My question is, how might I go about setting this up in BV Commerce? I've thought about using the categories to achieve this but that seems a bit unsophisticated! I've noticed that there are "Searchable Properties" under Options >> Search Settings but i'm not quite sure how to use these.
Any advice from anyone who's done anything similar would be most appreciated.

I'm also curious how the searchable properties worked. I assumed that you'd be able to select properties setup for your product types, but we have several and the searchable properties list still all show none for us. |

My own testing seems to suggest that a keyword search looks in the following fields:
Name
LongDescription
ShortDescription
SearchKeywords
METAKeywords
METADescription
It did NOT seem to search my Custom Property Values.
