Given the problems some are having here and with other carts with Paypal and Google checkout.... I'm wondering if anyone really NEEDS these methods of payment in addition to accepting the major cards.

I have yet to get any indication that I've lost a single sale for lack of accepting Paypal or Google. I'm thinking even a few saved sales won't make up for the hastles involved in integrating them.

I'm sure PP and Google sales are nice to have but, does anyone think lack of PP or Google does anything other than move the sale to a CC instead? After all, just about anyone intellegent/affluent enough to be able to set-up and maintain a PP or Google account has a few credit cards, no?

Aside from a slightly lower fee by perhaps a 1% or so is it worth it? Remember, unless you drop credit cards, you still pay the monthly fees to the majors, so that cost isn't eliminated with the addition of PP and Google.

Mitch: For us, we actually gain more confident and expect to gain more sales as some customers trust GoogleCheckout or PayPal to handle their credit card charges than us, the merchant.

With the introduction of GoogleCheckout "International Shipping" (Source: http://googlecheckoutapi...ernational-shipping.html), we hope to:
1) To deal with more International customers, because we have to cancel about 25 to 50 International orders a week due to the lack of address verification.
2) and the benefit is Google Actually check the billing address for card holder in many countries. Our regular Merchant account only has the ability to check billing address of a credit card holder with US-issued credit card.

See here for more info: Google Checkout is available to buyers with billing addresses in... http://checkout.google.c...n/answer.py?answer=48115

After 8 hrs of modifications, testings, we have now modified the GoogleCheckout to accept International orders. FYI: What shipped with BVC5 SP2 only supports for conducting business in US, not even Canada or all other International countries.

We will "FORCE" all International order to go thru GoogleCheckout as the only allowed payment method. PayPal has it's problem of not support "CONFIRM" address in many countries and our own Merchant (Authorized.NET) does not verified billing address for a non-US issued credit card.

Hope this helps.

Mitch,

I can only say that in the 24 hours that I had my BV5 store up and running and did not have PayPal set up, I had at least two customer *complaints* about where it was. In our marketplace we have some very frugal customers who think PayPal is the safe way to shop -- they do a lot of shopping on Ebay, so it's easy for them and they prefer it. Given a commodity-type item where they can purchase the same thing from antoher online bird store that has PayPal and we would not, I would say, yes, we would lose the sale.

Google Checkout is so new -- the three customers I had use it while I had it up and running, it was their first time using it. However, if I ever get it working again using carrier rates, I will offer coupons to customers to check out that way and save the fees, at least through the end of the year.

You just hit on one of my Conspiracy Theories.

I think it depends a lot on who you are and what you are selling.

My impression is Pay Pal acts as an intermediary for transactions and guarantee's your purchase to be delivered or your money back. With up to 60% fraud or failure to deliver in some Ebay categories the consumer is looking for some protection for their online purchases. Pay Pal provides that protection.

What the consumer doesn't know is all internet Credit Card transactions can be contested by the consumer. Any of us that offer Internet CC processing pay an extra premium for this privilege.

Not to be out done by Pay Pal, all the Credit Card companies are offering consumer credit protection plans free for 90 days. Then they charge their exorbitant fees to provide you with something you already have for free including a credit report every year (your maximum liability is $50 or nothing if it is an internet transaction).

So I've concluded: If the public perceives you to be a reputable business, you don't need those succors. If they perceive you to be of doubtful character, then Pay Pal would probably increase your sales.

In our market segment, we at Laura Stamm Power Skating are perceived to offer the best skating instruction for hockey players in the world. No one is going to buy anything from us outside that market segment anyway. So we feel Pay Pal may decrease our creditability.

Mich, there are some people who prefer to use their PP account and often times will compare two products at stores and use the one that takes PP. In your case, due to the custom nature of your products, you don't really have that problem.

So far it's the merchants driving the google checkout. When you can get free processing based on the amount of Ad-words you buy, it's very appealing. The customers are slowly coming on-board. I think when google teams up with an "aol" for instance, and starts splashing one click check-outs etc, the numbers should jump substantially.

The marketing guy in me says accommodate the customer, but not to the detriment of usability (sales). To many choices are often confusing to the customer "shipping options" for instance can actually get to complicated for the customer. Payment options are not really confusing, they will pick the one that is best for them. From their choice on however, it needs to be easy and bullet-proof from start to finish.

Imagine in the old days where we were deciding to offer MC or Visa, well that seems like a pretty silly question now - lol. I think your product line and more importantly your user base should decide what is and isn't offered.
