How can users who place an order without creating an account check their order status?

I don't think they can -- but if they don't want to create an account, why would they think they could check on an order? I frankly never understood that one. I tried it when I first set up my BV5 store, but what I ended up with was orders where customers didn't leave an email address, telephone, and no payment information (they chose Telephone as their payment option) -- of course they didn't call and the only way I could contact them was to send them snail mail to their billing address.

We don't want to require customers to create an account, because it's sort of a pain to go through the extra step to create the account. But we still need to allow them to check their order status. Has anyone created a custom page to do this?

I'm not sure I'd want just anyone to just type in an order number and see the order's details. Signing into a valid account is the best way to be sure the visitor has any business looking up information of this nature.

Perhaps a selection on the 'contact us' page could include a request that an update be sent to the email used to place the order. They can then email you and after making sure they are legit, send them an update.

Hi Rob,

We have developed a workflow task that automatically creates an account for a customer when using the 1 page checkout option. The password is randomly generated and sent via e-mail at the conclusion of the checkout process. It does require a few changes to the user sign-up process as the system is designed to use the e-mail address as the username to prevent any additional action by the user.

The downside to this system is that for future orders, the customer is required to login to their newly created account for future orders to prevent the creation of duplicate accounts with the same e-mail.

Couldn't you set it up that the User name be the order number? This would solve the issue of having duplicate accounts.

It could be automated any way you like. The client that we developed it for had a 50/50 split between repeat business and new customers. As such to keep the database clean of a substantial amount of duplicate/triplicate/"etcicate" data, this system was designed. If the order number is used for the username, every new order is going re-input the same information for potentially the same customer. Meaning duplicate/etcicate address data, name, e-mail, etc.

My typical recommendation is that unless your repeat business is substantially small (<10%), accounts should probably be created to prevent such an excessive amount of duplicated data which is one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of the original functionality of the anonymous part of the checkout.
