I have built and costomized a half-dozen BV 2004 sites over the past year. I am currently enjoying the pleasure of working on my first BV 5.

The improvements and additions are amazing. Wish I could talk all of our clients into upgrading.

The only problem I have -- is the same grip I had with 2004 -- the compile time is horrendous!

The new site I am building is going to have a large number of customizations (Got about 6 months of work ahead of me). So I am starting off with my old trick of creating a adding a new project to the solution that will house more of the customized code. I then remove all of the projects except the web project from the Configuration Manager, so when I do have to debug or force a new recompile I only have two project to complie. But the Website Site proejct still takes two-three minutes to compile.

My development machine is 3.19 GHz with 2.25 GB of RAM, with 80 GBs of RAM running Windows XP and the development project lives on a sever that is running Windows 2003 (3.0 GHz and 1.49 GB of RAM)

All of my 2005 projects that I have developed from scratch compile lighting fast in this environment. But because of the size and or set up of BV I dread debug and/or recompiling. Any recommendations to changing my IDE configurations and/or the project set up, would be much apprciated!

* Right click on the web project and select Properties.

* Select the Build options.

* Change the Start action to "No Build" or "Build Page".

* Uncheck "Build Web site as part of solution".

I wonder if that is related to the issue I have -- I've been working with my site using the VS Studio Express -- if I try and load the remote site in VSE, it takes a good 20 minutes for the site to load. Local site loads fast. And I'm on cable modem (5mb speed). I was wondering if something was wrong my installation (of VSE).

Andy,

Scott's post on this topic should be required reading for every professional .NET developer. I went from debugs taking up to 5 or 6 minutes to having a debug compile time of 5 seconds. Many, many thanks!

If you lived in the area, the beer would be on me tonight.
