A real need for us is to be able to generate a pdf print catalog somehow. Anyone working on something that will do that?

Hey joe, i'm in the same boat with a client. but after serious digestion and discussions, they're two totally different animals. I've been developing a print catalog for about a month now and after showing it to customers, they love it. The general design is parallel to the web, but product presentation is 100% different as well as *category* setup.

Print is powerful and I think it deserves more attention than a plugin. Yes, it's time consuming and costly, but a good print catalog goes a very long way. (specially when it's left on the coffee table)

I would give the prospect of a print catalog more thought than just hitting a button.

The print company I use all the time for end product is www.gotprint.com

fast, easy, great prices. there are others out there though...

just my two cents :)

Thanks Matt -- I had someone who was going to put together a print catalog for me a couple of years ago for $500 -- that was more than I wanted to pay -- in my market, the return on the amount spent isn't worth it -- and when you talk about having to pay for at least 1,000 copies, half the catalog would be obsolete (products and/or prices) before I get requests for a tenth of that many. I only get calls for maybe a dozen catalogs a year.

Joe, back in SF6 land, I had Randall Moore at Stokes create one for me. It sat as an icon off to the side and would grab the entire site, attributes, images and all and place one to two products to a page. Lots of paper to print out, but I did this just to be able to see a product away from the internet.

I'm wondering if a hidden "EVERYTHING" category would help. I'm considering making one just to play with.

I hear you Joe.

I had tossed out in conversation one time about the ability to click *print page* and a PDF was created on the fly. A ton can be handled with a print stylesheet. Maybe that's something to consider?

What does a print out of a product page look like on your site? could be a day of printing out selected pages to fulfill a mini catalog?

I'm going to give that a try actually -- just print out the category pages -- maybe cut out the left column and paste and copy.

If you want to do it yourself, get Acrobat Pro, create a print.css stylesheet your theme to get your printed pages exactly the way you want them (hiding navigations, etc., and testing with print preview), then print from your browser directly to Adobe PDF. Edit and organize your pages in Acrobat.
