Under consideration. Comments wecome.

Got a hard-sell phone call. Seems I need to pay 1,800.00/yr so they can scan my site once a month and tell me what to fix security-wise.

Sales will go up because people recognize their logo on my site and will feel good about entering their credit card. I know this has been discussed here before....

We're using it but don't display the logo. It messes up your log files so they are unusable in BV and in most 3rd party software applications. It may have a denial of service effect at times when run. Studies outside of those pushed by scanalert show a minimal bump in conversions of maybe 1/2 a % but that can be significant depending on your industry. The package would be much more complete if they offered some actual insurance with it against hacking.

Check your various organizations and hosts, you don't have to pay anywhere near that rate.

I think customers like it -- in surveys my customers said it made a difference. I balked at $1200/year when I first got it and then somehow they were bought out and I was changed to like $150/year -- I don't know how but I'm not complaining. There are partners out there where you can get it for less, plus other competitors of theirs as well that are just as good, I think.

I don't like that they change their pricing client by client all the time. We have customers that pay them $200/yr total, and some that pay over $2000.00/yr.

The fastest way to get the price down, is cancel the account, they will call you back and drop their pants.

Aside from that, we have seen mixed results some good, some bad, so I think your industry and user demographic should determine the types of "feel good" endorsements you buy.

Comodo has a competing product called "Hacker Guardian" that has a consistent affordable price.

I went to 5 other cart forums. Feelings are as mixed as the results. One thing I found on all of the forums... Sooner or later store owners had to answer the question "Have you had a problems with hackers? Is this why you had to get protection?"

I just don't need to plant the seeds of doubt in a shopper's mind, and I'll never put the work "hacker" on my site. It'd be like denying you're a crook.

One thread was about the ENORMOUS bandwidth absorbed while scanning. A large site went over it's monthly limit by 30%.... twice. When was the last time you had THAT happen?

The salesman called back yesterday. High pressure, dropped the price $300.00 to $1,490.00. Yadda, yadda..... No thanks.

The "enormous" bandwidth is no small issue on big sites. The google bot and Scan bot run into each other all the time in the middle of the night when they are the most aggressive. This usually ends up with the google bot taking it on the chin - NOT GOOD.

If you see a lot of 500 errors in your logs at google, but you know all the pages load fine, check the timing and see if scan alert was in there at the same time, this actually happens quite a bit.

They really need to work on their bots. The site shouldn't be deep scanned every night of the week. Once it passes a full run, they should scale back on the daily and do the deep scan weekly or monthly.

You said it right Mitch. It's what is holding us (clients & I) from implementing anything like Hacker Safe. But it's 50/50. Joe has had a positive response.

I contacted them for info on it and got a 1yr quote for $1700 + $100 set up.
Sales Rep lowered it down to 1yr $999 + $100 set up, since I do under 5K month

I'm sure i don't need it, but I see the darn logo everywhere. Almost all the big wigs in my arena have something like it, And "Hacker Safe" has been atleast %50 less than others, like Comodo.

Good to know about the draw on the bandwidth.

If hackers are a problem, why not just put the whole site under the SSL umbrella, Or would that have even worse consequences ?
Nevermind, I'll bet Google would pass you by like a guaranteed zone.

There is no requirement to display the logo on your site meaning you can have the protection without worrying yourselves over the implications.

The scans are intensive but we've never had any issues.

Hpros, they don't sell protection, nor insurance. They just tell you about the problems that they find on your site. They give you a month or so to make corrections and if you don't fix the problems, they yank the logo from your site until you do. If you don't show the logo in the first place....

I asked what happens if I do what they say and still get hacked - do they give refunds or cover the costs incurred? You can guess the answer I received.

Assuming you don't change anything but products and prices, what's likely to change from one scan to the next - possibly for months?

With the changes many of us make to our sites on a daily or weekly basis it's nice to know there are no known exploits. Hackersafe gives you 72 hours to remedy a situation before they pull the seal. In short it provides some security in the event a site change causes a vulnerability.

I think a lot of it depends on your industry. Most of our competitors have it, many major retail sites now have it. As one of our long term customers told us last week when they learned we have it "we trust you" but they were much more comfortable knowing a third party at least verified the site is indeed somewhat secure. Remember the only commonality between our sites and those of the huge retail sites on the web are common logos like Hacker/Safe.

The increases are undoubtely smaller than they proclaim. By one study we read last week it's more like 2% but for many even a 2% increase in completed carts is huge.

Agreed on the prices, it's infuriating to hear of so many different prices being paid.

At this point we can't recommend HackerSafe. #1, it really does at times result in DoS and #2 the bot timing is unpredictable. Tonight was the 2nd time it hit our site during business hours which is inexcusable. I do not understand why they cannot schedule the bot for nights. Last Thursday it checked the site at 2pm in the afternoon!

And again they're scanning the site at the height of the business day, 12pm ET. JMHO, that's not good.
