I have inventory set to 5. I add one to the cart and then to test I added 900.


The error message coming up is:



An item in your cart does not have enough quantity to complete order. Please modify it.



That's great. however, 900 products are being added. And the price reflects this.



IMO, the system should only add the remaining products in Inventory and the error message should be reflective that this is what happened.

The cart page should have an error displayed on the individual line item that says the exact number available. Are you not seeing this?

Hey Justin, just formatted it and I'm testing.

Do you think making a customer adjust the quantity and click the update button a second time is helping or interrupting the sales process?

We considered automatically updating the quantity to reflect the number in stock but we couldn't decided if that was more confusing or not. I *think* that notifying the users that there isn't enough items and letting them pick how many they want to buy is better than changing the amount that they entered. This is just my opinion though and if there are enough people who think that it should not be this way then we will certainly consider making it configurable.

Cool. I was thinking that you tossed it around.

This is only in the situation that a user is adjusting quantities on the cart page.

If you're considering a change, I'd like to see that if there are 5 widgets in stock and I decide at the cart page to buy 20, only the number in stock is added. The message would say something like "The amount entered exceeds the inventory level of this product, the available quantity has been added to your cart."

I think the most confusing part of it was that when I added 900. The price reflected 900 which isn't available. I'm hesitant to say that a user is 100% certain on how to use the update cart button based on the error messages.

I could massage the error messages, but I think I'd like to chomp it off at the bit and remove the responsibility of updating a second time by the user.

However, toss in the scenario of backordering. If a product is set to allow backorders, how does the cart handle this? how does the application handle this? seperate line items (1st for in stock, 2nd for backorderd)?

Yes, backordered items will be a fly in the ointment on this. We don't even consider backordered products to be out of stock as far as the user is concerned. This may have been a consideration for why we did it this way, but these decisions were made so long ago that it is hard to remember.

The problem that we would have with splitting the item into two rows for backorders is that we have code that consolidates line items if you have that option turned on. I'm not sure how much logic would be required in order to know that these line items should not be merged later on.
