Anyone else see this problem:

Start Here: http://www.medsupplier.com/exam-table-promotions-medical-equipment.aspx

Notice the navigation structure. Its correct, highlighted on the Promotions Category which is a sub of Exam Tables. Then, click on my logo ot the top to go home. Click on any of the products. Check out the navigation. Its still on the Promotions Category.

Am I the only one that this happens to or is this something BV has never caught? This is a huge problems for customers. How can they navigate properly if the cat structure doesnt even work? Hopefully its something that is just happening to me...

(BTW the promotion page above is not active)

If I hold the mouse over the logo img in the site when I hard-type the URL in, the "Shortcut to www.medsupplier.com' message in the bottom tray stays until I move the mouse.

If I hold the mouse over the logo img in one you say is broken, (reached via the instructions above) , the 'Shortcut..." message flashes and leaves.

There is a difference. Good catch. Beyond me why... I will say, I never, ever put 'home' in the upper nav. I've had problems up there since SP1. This is a navigation issue for sure, but I don't know how to get it fixed.

Try putting 'home' in the left menu stack and disabling the 'home' in the logo. See what happens.

More. I see that you do have 'home' in the left stack. When I mouse over this 'home', I see: "http://www.medsupplier.com/default"

When I mouse over the logo in the header, I see: "http://www.medsupplier.com/" ... no default. Might make a difference.

You're using URL re-write, right? I see no 'category' in the bar. maybe.... d'ja mis-label something?

Here is the problem, and the screen shots will help you follow. SCREEN SHOT 1 - customer comes on this page. SCREEN SHOT 2 - Customer clicked on our logo from screen shot 1 to get to the home page. SCREEN SHOT 3 - Customer clicked on a product to view it. The problem is that the category structure from SCREEN SHOT 1 is the same as SCREEN SHOT 3... and the product from SCREEN SHOT 3 doesnt even exist in that category. Try and follow the steps with the screenshots and you will see the problem.

EDIT: sorry, the last image states, stools, but it is suppose to be tables.

The only thing i can currently think of is because i created my own custom HTML catoegry structure on the front page. For some reason its remembering the category structure going to the front page, and keeping that same structure leaving the front page, even though the product leaving the front page is under a different category!

I'll toss this into a dev site later today as I'm getting the same randomness. Are you seeing this problem by watching someone through sightmax or are you experiencing the problem when you browse yourself?

I ask because when I'm working, I usually have 5 or 6 tabs open with various parts of the front and back open of the same site and I hit this issue every once in a while and wonder if it's related to this.

Its something I noticed. I was checking the flow of my promotion and site actually. I will take a look at the thread above and report back how it works in SP3.1.

Mitch:
The cat structure on the front page should be able to be custom. If I left the navigation up to BV's nav, it would only show 5 cats/departments. Not the ideal situation. HOWEVER, I did notice that when i do leave in the BV nav, it still happens on different ocassions.

There is something going on with ...sitename.com/default, and ...sitename.com/<null>. Why the difference when clicking the logo?

On some BV sites you get either .../Default -OR- ..../default at the same site when on the home page depending on how you got 'home'.

On some BV sites, if you type in '/default' (mine for instance) you get a 'page not found' error.

How are these set?

I just went to the source (my wife, an SAP guru and 30 year programmer going back to the punch-card days)

On some unix machines, upper case matters in file names. Also, the missing/reappearing '/default' likely means that a different part of the code is being used and is causing only a partial refresh when going 'home'. This can cause the menu to stay as-is.

That's the difference between the logo and the menu 'homes'.

http://www.byoguitars.com/ for instance. Try it, upper case D, lower case d depending on the way back to 'home'.

Anyone remember '/index'?

I wish she'd tackle our needs, but I can't afford her.

adding the BV parant nav to the front page resolves nothing as well. This really stinks if a customer comes in on any page other then the home, visits the home page, and clicks on a product. They would be totally disoriented in the nav structure and most liekly leave. Not good news!

i tried both the logo at the top and the home in the nav. Both have the same results. The menu doesnt change. Im going to do a refresh on the server to see if some of my changes need it...

In IE6 there is a difference in the logo and the menu 'homes'. Look at the screen shots above. One gets default, the other doesn't. Different code is getting you home dependant on the button pushed.

Mitch,

I understand what you are talking about. I see it as well. However, clicking on home in the cat structure, or clicking on the logo doest change the intial problem i am having. The menu is still staying the same.

Even worse, I put the BV nav on the front page for Root Only. I come in the site on a product, visit the home page and in my root menu it states i am in a category. Check this out in the screenshot. How can I be in the equipment category if im on the homepage!

The 5 links in the bottom are NOT custom. They are straight out of the admin.

This time I came on the homepage and clicked on a product from the home page. My navigation shows only the roots after clicking o nthe product, even though this product does belong to a category.

My breadcrumbs are correct... Home > Diagnostic > AEDS and Defibrillators. I wonder why the category tree is not populating correctly with products on the front page? Weird.

Odd. Over my head from here on......

I still think there's a clue in the /Default... /default artifact. May not be a cause of your problems, but a symptom. Other sites have this happening. I wonder if they used trees in the menu they'd see sim behaviour?

well i tried troubleshooting what you said mitch, clicking on the logo vs home and they both show the same results. Ive never had this problem in BVC2004 so it is definetly something in the category menu code. I retraced my steps, troubleshooted multiple times, each a different method and still show the same results. My next test is to put a content block in the menu, let BV poulate the products and see if those links work. That way i can compare my custom html with BVs to see if there is a difference in the way the links are set up.
