I am thinking about using this cart for my new site, I am trying to figure out the requirements for hosting this.

I already have a windows shared hosting account, is it possible to use this or does this cart require particular hosting companies?

Having read various posts here, it's not very clear as some of the answers to installation queries has been if the host supports BVC5 etc.

Either of the two host's ads at the top of this page will get you the help you need. I use Reposio and am very satisfied and my needs are more than being met.

Don't consider using a host that isn't very familiar with the software.

Thanks for the reply, but it doesnt answer my question, I already have various hosting accounts, don't really want to have yet another account somewhere else.

What is the requirements for this software and why do you need a hosting company familiar with this?

Hosting Requirements:

ASP.NET 2.0
SQL Server 2005 or 2008 or SQL Express 2005 or 2008.

That's about it. If your host supports those two you should be all set.

But to back up what Mitch said -- yes, many hosts will be able to meet the "minimum requirements" -- but if they are not familiar with how the software works, you could very well (and I have seen it many times) with a support headache when you need help getting something working properly on your store, particularly if you are talking about a shared hosting environment -- I'm not sure how BV reacts in such an enviornment, but I do know that a lot of times an application such as this needs to be in its own "application pool" on the server, or your site will take down other sites, or vice-versa. Many hosts do not like to -- or will not -- put your application in a dedicated pool. At the very least, if you expect any sort of traffic at all, should be on a virtual server or some server that limits the number of sites to a low number (such as 25 or less).

I have downloaded the trial version and having some problems creating a new site, here is my setup;

Dedicated windows server with sql express 2005, using SQL Login.

Using create a Site by FTP.

When I press the Start button, the database is created but the installation fails on the 1st step with a X
SQL Tables Created

The connection to the server works fine from MS Access, I can create and upload tables using ODBC with the same credentials. I can connect to the database from SQL Management Studio.

Any ideas what might be going wrong?

Looks like there is not much support unless this software is installed on one of the recommended hosting companies.

I guess I will carry on looking for something more suitable to my needs, I don't want to be tied to a particular hosting company otherwise I might as well go for a hosted cart solution.

If you want to build a successful ecommerce site where you limit your downtime and problems, matching your host to your cart choice is crucial. Trying to find a cart solution that matches your host is putting the cart (no pun intended) before the horse. You will only end up with headaches down the road.
Also -- this is not "support forum" -- this is a users forum -- if you need help you should go to the support ticket system -- no one from BV I have seen has recommended a host to you, it's only us users who are doing so, and rightly so because we have seen how critical a choice it is.

I was under the impression that this was a forum run by the company, and I had posted in the pre-sale questions area.

But anyway thanks for your feedback, helps me with my research.

The company folks do respond here, yes, but it is not necessarily a "dedicated support" function as such -- there is a ticket system for support, though I'm not sure how that works with using the demo. The demo should set up just fine on a local machine, as long as you have things set up correctly. The problem with me -- as probably with most -- is that it has been so long since we did that procedure, it's hard to remember. You will get a lot of support here, but it may be from users as well as from company folks.

We have clients that came from cheap hosts, we have clients that were paying the most you possible could in other places come here. I guess in the end it's a business decision.

What is your time worth? Here, your store would already be up and running and you would be on to the next level of questions already. You mention you already have many accounts with hosts, well how much assistance have they provided so far?

Get a yahoo store (you mentioned a hosted solution), it's easy, it's in one place and you don't need to worry about changing things and installing things because with a hosted solution you can't do any of that.

The whole beauty of BV is it can be customized to do just about anything. With that said, it's also a double-edged sword. As you change and modify the application the more reliant you will become on support. Call godaddy (a cheap host) with a menu problem and they will tell you the server is running and to figure out your own problems. Call us and not only will we have an answer, but chances are we already have built modules to solve the specific problem. I think of us as more "application hosting" than "web hosting".

Besides getting it running (which honestly is a 5 minute routine) what will your host do when you are in a tight spot and it isn't clear where the issue lies between the app and the server? Do you want to hear "good luck with that I hope you figure it out", or "we have seen that before and this is the problem"?

For me this is quite easy. I can bring my Ford to the Chevy garage and chances are they could eventually figure it out (on my dime). For me I would much rather bring it to the solution to begin with.

We don't operate as a cheap host, so our plans don't work for some and that's understandable, we haven't worked with a lot of the BV hosts, but I know AppliedI (they have a link at the top of the page) has good BV support and low prices.

So when you say "hosting - what's required?" My list (as well as most successful developers and merchants) would start off with,

A host that has.....

1. A good understanding of the application

That's about it, there is no #2. All the details are encompassed in #1.

When you find the host that can satisfy the first requirement getting it going locally and remote, building a catalog that can perform and sell, marketing it, scaling it all to handle the growth etc. is all part of the ride.

Don't think of your host as a "forced" decision when it comes to application hosting, think of them as your "ace in the hole".

...ditto , and that's why we use and will continue to use Resposio.
