Is BV so successful it does not care about new customers?

Thursday eve
I do not understand why the demo software does not have installation instructions.
I do not understand why a query to support is returned with "No support with the demo." Instead of links to the relevant info.
I do not understand why there is not a forum dedicated to installation/configuration.
Usually the reason for demo software is to impress potential customers, so they are inclined to become long term users and thereby give lots of money to the company.
Here I find no clear installation instructions, no demo FAQ, etc. And for what is available, no direct links to such resources.
I do not want to spend hours attempting to troubleshoot a demo installation.
I want to evaluate the software.
I have read many messages including requests for a basic description of how the software modules are connected, how to easily update,...
I am coming to figger the company does not have enough of the right people who know how to support users. So, it is relying upon users.
This is probably because the company is not charging enough for the software.
And I am concerned about learning of another company that sells tools for version 4 but not 5. Did the company stop? Or did BV not provide adaquate support for updating their software? (I am aware of many companies that stupidly not help third party companies update add-ons.)
I am not impressed, in spite of the many glowing reviews I read before I attempted to play with the demo.
And why can I not find an easy way to get email notification of replys to messages I have posted?
J

Hello J, Did you find the online documentation ( Support > Documentation > BVC5 User Manual)? The Getting Started section describes 2 methods for installing BVC5. I can't answer your only question (re email notifications), but they are working on a new version of the forum software. If you have the time, you could post a suggestion. If you have any other questions, please post. As an aside, I can attest that BV Software was very supportive of me migrating Shipper from BVC2004 to BVC5. |

Johnny, Just fire the questions on the forums and you generally get an answer. BV might be a bit oriented for the company that has a bit of technical background or support. You need a bit of time to customize it but except that is really great. Installation is a breeze if you have any technical knowledge and know what IIS and SQL ARE and how to use them. If not, just get one of the recommended ISVs like Resposio to deploy it for you. Regarding demo, if you are not a developer, just apply for an online demo site. Fully-featured, pre-installed. Regarding support, I think the forum is great and responsive.
Regards, Corneliu. |

Johnny, I'm sorry that you are feeling frustrated with the demo experience. There is a complete user manual with installation instructions at http://www.bvsoftware.com/BVCommerce5Manual/If you are having difficulty with the installation process you can also consider hosting your site with one of our partners at http://www.bvsoftware.com/partnersAs you mentioned, we have a very low price on the software given the amount of features available making it a great value. We're able to offer this low price specifically because we sell to a lot of development companies who handle the installation process for their customers.

Friday Morning Thank you all for your replies. My immediate testing problem: Vista Business, user is an "administrator" MS SQL 2005 standard with all updates; listed in the TASKmgr as running I have another application that uses SQL. It works fine, and I can open the SQL mgmt studio and do stuff. I have verified settings with respect to this step by step guide: http://www.acorns.com.au/bv/blog/?p=100 with screenshots attached. I enter all the info on the CREATE NEW SITE dialog, I click start, and then this error: Prerequisites Check SQL 2005 could not be found on this computer,... And then I am unhappy. Any thoughts?

Use the manual installation process if you are having trouble with the site manager. The manual installation process is not difficult and does not require detection of a SQL server.

Yo Andy

I infer from this that your website, which mostly refers to 2004, has not been updated. Yes?
This was a concern.

Andy's shipping estimator is not required for BV Commerce 5 because similar functionality is already included. However, his Shipper program which offer batch shipping and integration with FedEx and US Postal Service for printing is available for BV Commerce 5 and may be a great option for customers who need that functionality.

Hello Johnny, Thank you for looking! The BVC5 section must be well hidden, http://structured-solutions.net/ShowCategory.aspx?CategoryID=10 Not a good sign?! |

Andy -- just FYI -- you were talking about Shipper, which I clicked on your Shipper link and saw right up front the link for the BVC5 version, so I do'nt think it's "hidden" at all.
I use both Andy's Shipper and Shipping Rate Provider Suite and I can speak very positively that the combination of those programs along with BVC5 have given me an advantage over my competition that has been very profitable.
I also had no problems installing the demo on my PC at all, though I do remember having to set the SQL admin to "SA" for it to work. But then I was working with XP and not the buggy Vista |

Johnny I'm with you. I'm just trying to get the demo to work and I'm at the point of giving up. How come it's SO hard just to get the demo to work ? Why can't we just have an online demo to play around with ? I've spend most of today to get this to work and was busy evaluating whether to use BVSoftware or aspdotnetstorefront. So far dotnetstorefront is winning. why ? because I can actually run it. nothing to do with functionality. Oh and btw I have posted a message in 'technical questions' about my error. http://forums.bvcommerce...lt.aspx?f=78&m=58871no reply as yet. Server Error in '/bvc5' Application.
