I was just wondering if anyone has gotten Google Checkout to work with Carrier Based shipping rates?

Do you mean using carrier rates in BVC5 or Google Checkout's carrier rates? I did some testing quite a while ago and found that when Google called BVC5 for carrier rates, it often took longer than 3 seconds--which Google considers a timeout--so the default shipping rate was displayed instead of the carrier rates. Unfortunately, the current implementation of Google Checkout in BVC5 does not support Google's carrier rates.

I want Google to use the carrier based rates in BVC5. I did know of the 3 second rule; I was just hoping that it had been improved.

If you are using my Shipper Rate Rule Providers, then there is some caching that may help. If the customer checks the rates by clicking on the Shipping Rates button or by starting a normal checkout, my providers will cache the calculated rates for a few minutes. Then if Google Checkout asks for rates to exactly the same location (and for the same items), my providers will return the cached rates instantly.

From my experience, it is not entirely the 3-second rule that you face -- it's matching what a customer gets in your store in an estimate with what they get when they go to Google Checkout. Let's assume the 3-second rule is no longer an issue. The next problem is that Google wants to base the shipping rates on what THEY get from the FedEx server and then use whatever multiplier (or subtraction) from the base rates you might supply. If you have a FedEx account that reads rates based on volume discounts, then you will never get a match with what Google Checkout tells the customer when they go to checkout. If they have checked rates using the estimator prior to checking out, then go to Google -- your store will look very bad because the numbers may very well not match and if they are higher at Google, then it looks like you are trying to add charges after the fact.

What if you don't want to offer your customers your discounted rates- they would just get the published rates- then does that take care of the problem?

Yeah, that would work -- in my case I would be charging my customers a good 25-30 percent higher for shipping and that would affect sales --- unless you have no competition.
