Search by Product Variation SKU Does Not Work

I'm running a search on skus that are associated with a product that has multiple product variations. Each variation has its own sku. When I run my search, no results are returned. I have 'Search sku' checked for one of my 'Keyword Search Columns'.

I believe it is only going to search the primary SKU of the product and not the variant SKUs. I don't think this necessarily qualifies as a bug but definitely should be considered for a search feature enhancement.
I would tiptoe into this one though, each table/column that the internal engine has to filter through is going to add a tiny bit of time to the overall search results display. I have a client that has some monster variants for quite a few products.
Brings me to a question though, are the variant SKUs so well known that your customers will be using them to find the product or is this more for internal use?
If your customers know all of your SKUs, a workaround could be to add a SKU relationship table via the product's long description. It could possibly be done with some custom programming, but manually could work as well. I'd head in the dynamic direction because the table would reflect any SKU changes without having to manually update the table. |

If you need customers to search your variant SKUs or any other text you can add it to the search keywords field of the main product and enable searching on the keywords field. I'll add searching on variant skus to the list of requested features for future updates.

Excellent. This is a big one for us. I am glad to hear the variant SKU search will be built into a future release.

I could use this as well. As customers have catalogs and many times want to order by the SKU in the catalog which of course can be a variant.
