I'm seeing this problem again -- for the past 2 hours -- had to shut USPS methods off to allow folks to check out. I'm also looking for a thread where Andy Miller talks about using his add-on to configure it so that something is returned when the shipper's server won't respond.

Yes, I'm having trouble, too. I saw this glitch for a phone order I was placing last week. It started working again so I blew off the issue.

We are having the same problem. We have a cart using another system that is working so I am not sure if it is a USPS server problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as this is affecting our ability to sell.

it is a USPS Server issue -- it's sporadic -- I'm leaving USPS choices off right now, using only FedEx -- if you only use USPS, you have a problem unless you use Andy's Shipping add on, and I think you can make a default rate or create an error message rather than crashing the cart.

Do you have a link where I can get this add on? Thanks.

I wonder if there is any way you can get info from USPS -- it's been about 8 hours now and there are still serious issues.

Could it be possible that something changed as in the URL to the server, as other sites I work with that are not BV are able to get the shipping rate from USPS.

Going back over my event log, I saw errors going back several days to when I updated to 5.4.0.5 (no errors that I recall with 5.4.0.3)
It almost certainly has to do with this build. Guess it's time for BV to cut their retreat short and get us a patch ;)

"The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive." means the other end (USPS's server) closed the connection. My guess is the USPS servers are hitting some limit.

Andy,

Can we set up a routine in your add-on that limits the time for trying to get a response? As it stands it's crashing the checkout and shipping estimator as it is taking too much time. If we could limit the time and then only return other (FedEx, UPS, etc) rates, or give a Flat Rate box rate, in a timely manner, that would at least allow us to keep the USPS methods visible.

Please help. I hope someone for BV can look into this ASAP because it is costing us orders and money. We only ship USPS and I have had to create a flat rate shipping option. I am loosing orders since a number of our items are very light and the customers are complaining that the shipping is high, and I am losing $s on the items I am shipping that don't fit in a flat rate envelope.

Short answer...no. Long answer...yes, but it would take a lot of code to implement timeouts in my Wrapper provider (the thing that calls BV's provider). It would take very little code (relatively) to implement timeout in BV's providers. Little code==fewer bugs, so it really should go in BV's providers.

I'd also like to see BV add retries to their providers so that you could configure them to try 3 times for example. Although that would lengthen the time it takes to retrieve rates (making Google Checkout a worse experience), I think it would make BV's checkout very reliable.

Motsuji -- can you set up a shipping charge table? I.e., orders of $0 to $10 cost $5 for shipping, $20 to $40 costs $8 -- or something like that?

The postal service has got to be losing big time bucks on this -- just about every cart that uses their API has had problems for 36 hours now.

Does anyone have any contacts that can get a clue as to what is going on with USPS? This is ridiculous -- 4 days and still not working. I thought it was last night but then an order came through and it gave way off shipping rates with a drop ship item again!
