I want to have one product with many variations such as a ticketed event with 5,000 seat possibilties. I would need it so that as soon as that product (with variation is added to the cart it is removed from inventory so there is no risk of 2 people getting the same seat assignment. Also, I would obviously want to import the product and all variations or modifiers.

Thanks,

Derek

I would set your inventory to 5000 and set the default setting to remove from store when out of stock. Also you would want to set the options in the admin > Options > Reserve Inventory on : Add to Cart. This way when someone adds the items to the cart it will subtract it from the inventory. By default if someone adds the item it to their wish list then it will remove it from inventory.

Hey Brendon,

Thanks for the response.... I just realized I left out the important part of my question, these are 5,000 different seats each with a qty of 1. That I why I am curious about the best way to accomplish this. I could have 5,000 unique products but would prefer to have 1 sku with the 5,000 options so to speak.

Thanks,
d.

You could set it up as one product but with 5000 of that item available. Or did you mean you want to have one product with choices like, balcony, front row, etc....?

Hi Brendon,

Yes, it is one product "Concert XYZ" which has seats AAA1, AAA2, AAA3 etc with only a possible qty of 1 per unit. They are 5,000 unique, numbered seats.

Thanks,

d.

Hmm, that is an interesting challenge. I think you will need to develop a custom seat selector widget. Listing 5,000 choices as a radio button list or dropdown list isn't viable. You may also run into performance issues with so many choices, but I'd have to look into it further to determine that for sure.

I'm staring at Ticketmaster.com.

I'm looking for some baseball tickets, I enter the qty and choose "Best Available" or have options like "Dugout Box" "Left Field" "Right Field" "Upper Level".

The site filters through the variables and spits out the available tickets based on my criteria.

No idea how you would accomplish this OOTB with BV. I think a custom solution is up your alley.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your comments!!!

Matt, you are absolutely correct about ticketmaster that you dont pick a particular seat but rather what area or price level you want to spend and then it spits out the best available option for you. This would be a fine way for me to do it as well........

The majority of events I do are general seating so this has never really been an issue but I am just thinking ahead for a solution in the event I need it.

Thanks,

Derek

Just thinking on the surface, but what if you created a product for each "seat" -- i.e., Product AAA1, Product AAA2 -- you could then either have categories for the events, and do a database copy of all the products from one category into another, removing them from the store when purchased. You also might have the events as product modifiers, so that customers purchase the "seat" and choose the event -- if that seat has been taken, then that event would not be available to add to cart.
