I personally refrain from ever putting special characters or HTML in category or product names because I have had issues arise in the past (on different systems)...but I have a client who is wanting to do this, and I need a legitimate reason to recommend against it. Is there one? Has anyone had any issues with HTML in category or product names?

Thanks,

Sam

Sam,

I agree that you should avoid it if at all possible, especially with product names, as these are more likely to be displayed as plain text (e.g. order emails). We have used HTML in category names, but it's usually something like a <span> tag which has little visual impact. What is your client trying to do that "requires" this?

It's motivated by marketing (as most of these types of requests are ;). They are doing it strictly to control formatting. I suggested putting the HTML formatted name in a separate field (creating one for it) and I was looking for a good reason to pass along with the suggestion. Thanks you gave me just what I needed, I hadn't thought about the HTML in plain text emails which is unprofessional and marketing should recognize that.

Yeah, a separate field to flag a product is definitely a better way to go. You could leverage Type Properties for this customization so you only have to modify the front end of the site rather than modifying the Core project.

Myabe I'm missing something, why can't the formatting be controlled via the stylesheet?
