Is it possible to run a store on a sub-domain? The reason is that I have to be able to list tickets at the price (currency) in which the event is taking place. For example, tickets for a US show need to be charged in US$ wheras a Canadian show has to be charge din Can$.
I have done this before by having to seperate sites, one setup as US$ and one setup as Can$.....www.mysitecan.com and www.mysiteus.com.

Is it possible to accomplish this off of one domain ....www.us.mysite.com and www.can.mysite.com?

Thanks,

Derek

Thanks Aaron,

Are there any performance issues to watch out for? By "yes" I am assuming you mean running 2 seperate sites, one in each currency with the appropriate processor, each mapped to their own sub-domain?

Thanks for your help!

Derek

Running a site on a sub-domain has no adverse affect on performance. Think of this as simply running another site where the same rules apply. If both sites will be in the same language, you will probably want to give some thought to the search engines; you don't want to be penalized for duplicate content.

Thanks Aaron!

As a side topic....is there anyway to do this so that the content is pulled off the same db but then it is directed to the appropriate sub-domain for checkout so it clears in the proper currency?....I know it is a little more complicated than that : )

Thanks,

Derek

Honestly, if that's what you're trying to do, the best way to tackle it is to make the checkout process smarter so it uses a different payment processor based on the customer's country.

Thanks Aaron,

That is exactly what I was thinking. Since it is know what country the customer is from by the time the payment is to be processed...that would be a great solution. Any idea how bug a customization this would be?

Thanks,
derek

You first message said the tickets need to be listed in the correct currency, such as USD for an event in Detroit, MI and Canadian dollars for an event in Windsor, ON. That probably would not be too hard (store the event country in a product property and then format the display using the corresponding currency format).

For people that live near the border, what currency should be used for the payment transaction? For example, if I lived in Detroit but wanted to attend an event in Windsor, ON, what currency is charged? I think you may need to charge in the event currency (since that is how they are listed) and not in the customer's currency.

How would you handle an order with tickets for events in multiple countries, such as Detroit, MI and Windsor, ON? Maybe the checkout should use multiple payments in that case: one for the US event (in US dollars) and one for the Canadian event (in Canadian dollars) and let the credit card sort it out. You would have to warn the customer that there will be multiple charges and possibly foreign exchange fees.

Thanks Andy...good points!

Now that I think about it my original comment was misleading, the charge to the customer does not need to be in their currency specifically, but rather the currency of the event.

you are correct a concert in Detroit should be charged in US$ and whether you live in Detroit or Windsor you would be charged the ticket price in US$ and the credit card co. would sort it out for the Canadian customer. Similarly, it the concert was in Windsor the event would be in Can$ and the Canadian rate would be charged to each customer with the US credit card co. doing the conversion this time.

Hopefully that simplifies it a bit....I don't need a store with the ability to charge 2 different rates (I realize my most recent post indicated that it would be based on the customer address but that is not correct) just the ability to charges US for US events and Can for Canadian events.

Right now my only option is to have 2 stores, one sending US$ to the processor and the other sending Can$ to the processor.

Thanks for your comments....much apprecaited!

Derek
