Hi,

I might be missing something obvious here, however...

fyi:

We're running 5.4 rev5.

We only have United Kingdom in the Active Countries.

Every product is set to the EU Taxable Item tax class.

We have one tax item set up as follows:

Country: United Kingdom
State/Region:
County:
Postal/Zip Code: All Zip/Postal Codes
Applies to Type: All Taxable Items
Applies To Shipping: Yes
Tax Rate: 15.0000 %

Products are all showing as list price which is Ex VAT/Tax whilst browsing and also at the checkout. However, once a user has signed in it then adds and displays the VAT on the checkout - but still not whilst browsing the store. I presume this is because until it knows where the user is located it doesn't lookup the applicable tax.

However, we're only selling within the UK and so every item requires that it have VAT applied. Is there anyway to show this correctly on the product page or am I left with a manual hack to add 15% to the list price on the product page?

I'm guessing the latter option, but I'm sure I'm not the only person who's had this issue.

I couldn't find anything on the forums about it so forgive me if I'm repeating a previously asked question, I did look first!

Many thanks,

Stuart

Stuart,

I'm not sure how it is in the UK, but here in the States the tax is never included when when giving pricing information; it is only shown at the end of a purchase or checkout. In other words, a store would advertise a price of $5 for a product, but customers intuitively know that there will be tax added to it. I think it would be a great feature if BV incorporated the Estimate Shipping functionality onto the cart page so when you entered your location it would add any applicable taxes.

That said, if you want to show the product price with tax, you will need to customize the product page to compute this or, as you said, by adding the tax to the product price.

Thanks for your response Aaron.

Over here all prices on goods to sell to the public include VAT and are displayed as such. Trade shops/websites will usually show Ex VAT (Sometimes with the VAT price next to it) since most businesses claim the VAT back.

I remember my suprise the first time I went to Canada and got told that the displayed prices were excluding taxes!

Guess it's time to start tinkering with the checkout page :O)

cheers,

stuart

Just FYI, It's pretty much the same in Australia in that displayed or quoted prices must include GST (same as VAT) with the exception that you don't have to do this for non-consumer goods or services.

So, a Retail store (on or offline) always shows prices inclusive of tax. For B2B transactions, it's usually the opposite as businesses can claim back the GST. It also helps that we only have 1 rate (10%) and with very few exceptions (such as bank fees & charges) applies to everything. So for us, for example, we must charge tax on shipping costs unless it's an export order and for presentation, it's better to total all the base costs, then show the tax and then the grand total.
