It can be used with a web farm (multi-server), but out-of-the-box it cannot be used for multiple stores (though several people have customized it to do so). |

Do you have this multi-store mod?
Thanks,

Linette,
Not yet. There was another forum member that said they created this modification and was going to be selling it, but I never heard back from them. So, it looks like we'll be going it alone. We have a client that is dead set on going this, so we'll probably be starting development within the next two months.
There are so many ways that you can approach the 'multi-store' challenge that I suspect each merchant will have a slightly different take on it. What are your client's needs? |

In this case, the goal is to offer a sub-set of products in a specialty store with a different category structure.
So, the need is to have two separate stores, administered using separate backends, with most product data (description, sku, prices, inventory) being shared. Product reviews would be an exception (needs to be independent).
The product display could be modified with unique product templates and styles.
It seems like most everything else would be maintained separately (I know...something else will probably jump up as an issue.) Marketing, tracking, shipping, sales/offers, customers - all maintained separately.

Most likely set up one site as the master site and add WCF services to it that would feed the secondary and other sites. This would allow setting up the additional sites any way you want but they would just pull what is necessary from the master. An example I have worked on is www.outdooroutfitters.com This site is not hooked to a bv site as a master but instead for a majority of product a suppliers master site that supplies all the information. Even when you go to a product detail page like http://www.outdooroutfitters.co...-ammunition-F270FS2.aspx it hits the master and updates the inventory before the page is displayed. For non detail views inventory is updated every two hours. Even the images and quite a bit else is pulled from the master. All I got to say is all this is pretty complicated no matter how you go about it so I hope your client has some fairly deep pockets. |
