A thought:

I have a client who is looking to develop a store where users can upload their own products to sell in their own category. I immediately thought of BV, since that is what I use for all my other stores, but I don't think this can work OOTB.

Requirements would be (just a rough draft):
- Users have access to only their own products
- Users have access to only their own category
- Users have their own Ship From
- Users either have a monthly fee that users pay to upload their products, or the owner of the store (my client) gets a percentage of each sale from the user.
- Users get notified when a sale is made (just like the drop ship noti)
- Everything else (theme, look and feel, shopping cart) is maintained by the owner of the site.

Anyone have any ideas if we can try to implement this with BV with little customization (so updating SPs isnt a hassle)?

I'm affraid there are hidden dangers in this project. You will need to merge code for product and category management pages because those pages would be updated for sure. You have to track payment for each order by user so each user who uploaded the product will get his money and user will need to see the income. As each user will have his own ship from then checkout have to be customized. Possibly it needs to implement recuring billing to charge users on monthly base.

Bryan,

This will require considerable customization. Many source code and database changes will be required, so service pack updates will need to be done manually (though I don't think that's a big deal).

Hmm i think my client is looking for a more OOTB solution to keep intial costs down, but I havent found anything yet. He is budgeting to purchase a store platform, and the design of the store. Now when you say "hidden dangers", what do you mean? When i hear danger i immediatly think of vulnerability with an e-commerce store...

The other route I could go is to have a more social networking site. More of a "craigs list" style where the customer contacts the user. http://www.artbreak.com/ is a good example. However, we would really like to try and have a full shopping cart, but maybe BV isnt the best "store" to use for this type of store.

BTW Aaron, on an un-related note, i did talk about your faceted search with the owner, and we are going to out together a budget! I'd like to get our SP3 store up to SP5.6/5.7 first so we can get our SP upgrades under the plan.

I think it will be tough to find any store/platform that will give you this model OOTB. Given that, you want to find a good platform and build from there. BV is definitely a good foundation on which to build.

Sounds good, Bryan!

I agree. Actually looks like something that will take a lot of work to accomplish.

I agree too after doing some more research. I cant find anything close to being OOTB for this model. The biggest problem is trying to find something that allows users to have their own "mini-store" inside a store. I don't think i would stray away from BV. I use it for all my other stores. The next step is seeing what the modifications would run, or go for what artbreak.com does and stay away from a checkout (more social networking)

Oh sorry, I used not too good words... I mean you have to keep some important things working on this project. I have highlited some of them.

Unfortuantly I do not think you will find any solution with exact functionality OOTB on the market. But some platforms have many add-ons and plugins which could have similar capabilities. The problem here is that it will take time to dig into such system: choosing, installation, testing. So as you have experience with BV already it's optimal to use it to my mind.

Thanks... BV is very optimal in my mind. Me personally, i wouldnt want to go anywhere else. But i have to look at budgets too :(

I think it is a cool project, but im not funding it so it could also be fairly expensive ya know... We shall see.
