I am evaluating BV Commerce. We run an online printing shop that has a few basic "products" (business cards or flyers for example). Each product has many different choices available to it (paper type, size, cutting, color, gloss, etc). Each product has about 10-20 of these choices and each choice has it's own options (different sizes, different types of paper, different gloss types, etc). When I try placing all these "variants" into the bv commerce site, it seems to max out at 4 saying "there are already too many choices for this product".
Is this something BV commerce could handle OOTB or would I need to change the code to allow more variants? What problems could arise with too many variants? Could this limitation be "fixed" by sub classing the products into different types that include static options, and then adding variants and shared choices?
If you are interested, you can look at a product on the current site (printplace.com) to see the kinds of options I'm talking about.

When you create a "Choice" you are telling the system that you need to track SKU, Inventory and Price based on the customer's selection. If you have 10 choices with 10 options each you have 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 or Ten Trillion products generated behind the scenes. We have an artificial cap at about 100 variants. However, you have options.
a) Use "Modifiers" and not "choices." Modifiers do not create variant products but still display to the admin user the selections the customer makes. You can mix and match choices and modifiers. Only use choices when you need to change the SKU or Inventory based on selections.
b) Adjust the variant limit in the bvc_webappsettings table to a larger number. Be aware that you could slow down your site by doing this.

When you create a "Choice" -- there are three types: Product Choices, Product Inputs, and Product Modifiers -- the latter is what you want - it simply modifies the base product and does not create a "new" product |

I'm a full time web developer for a handful of clients, essentially, I'm their virtual "in-house" web guy. A 12 hour shift is a standard work day for me. I have the time and am not distracted with the day to day requirements of the entire retail process.
When I'm presented with catalogs, my goal is to minimize any and all choices to the fullest extent that I can get away with, my maximum has and always will be 2 choices with exceptions. This is a double edged sword and has it's drawbacks.
In terms of your print products, there are so many variants involved that minimizing to 2 choices is next to impossible. In fact, I just placed an invitation order (I apologize that it wasn't with you) and the product had 12 choices with too many variants to remember. My web development approach is null and void. |
