I've got a site on sp3 with some customization, what would be the easiest path to upgrade them? Usually I compare source of the newer version, but I'm unsure, if I'm going to 5.7.3, are there significant database changes? Would I want to do 5.4 then 5.5 etc? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Sam

Sam,

We always do source code comparison. For the database, it's a little trickier. If you go to the /BVAdmin/BVSql folder you can the scripts to individually (and in sequence) run each service pack. Just be careful that you don't blow out any database changes that you've made. You can also use a database comparison tool.

Aaron, thanks for the reply. Do you have any idea what the official upgrade path is from SP3? Is it SP3 to 5.4, 5.5, 5.5a, 5.6, 5.6a, 5.7? Or would you think I could go directly from SP3 to 5.7?

Btw - the sole purpose of this upgrade is PCI compliance (I know - a little last minute), does anybody know if there are particular things I can incorporate or upgrade to reach this goal or do I need to upgrade the entire site?

I'm really not sure. With the stores we build there is much that we change that we always have to merge code. So for us, it really wouldn't make much different on the 'path' of the upgrade other than for the database.

I am really dreading upgrading this particular store...would rather do it at another time, does anyone know the implications of running SP3 past 7/1/2010? :D

what i did with mine is created a dev store with an exact copy of my sp3 store. then i tested the update on the dev. worked fine, but had to merge the files that I had changed from the stock sp3 site. im no developer... took me less than a day. It was nice to clean up some of my old code as well. once is was working up to a few bugs that i reported with sp7, i did the same thing to the real store which took less then an hour after forgetting a few things. my fault. total time closed to customers was very minimal. We are B2B anyways so there is no traffic early in the morning ;)

Yeah I'm used to doing diff/merge/etc but on this one there is a ton of customization and I'm just trying to put it off a little. Again, does anyone know the implications of running 5.3 after 7/1/2010?

Yeah thanks but I'm perfectly capable of typing that question into google myself ;)...what I was hoping is for someone who understands it better or has already done the research to give me a summary of the critical points. That's why we have forums/blogs/etc correct, so people can share their knowledge and not reinvent the wheel? I try to help others where I have already done the research / had experience and can save them time in coming to an answer (as do many others on the web), it's an exchange of knowledge correct? Anyway, if anyone else can provide helpful insight to my question I'd appreciate it.

From my understanding, pci compliance is a way for the cc companies to shift liability from fraud to different links in the handling chain. If fraud occurs, they can go back through and investigate (and fine if necessary) the parties who were involved in handling the data. And, there's a bit of a gray area in what pci compliance entails, kind of like osha requirements. You have to overcompensate security if you want to insure that you won't be liable. Also, if you don't store cc data and depending on the method of communication/transfer your likelihood of breach/liability goes way down.

I am not immediately concerned with liability. Not knowing much about how the standard is being enforced I was mainly concerned with being able to process transactions without interruption after 7/1. It's my impression there's no switch that's being flipped so that all incoming transactions have to follow certain requirements or they will be denied. :D I am just trying to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Sam, trust me, I'm not offended by your comments. I'm the third highest contributor to these forums when it comes to knowledge sharing, help, advice and support. I've spent alot of time helping people here since 2003.

I posted the link because it's the second time you've posted the question and it's obvious that nobody is capable of giving you the solid answer without taking a chance of guiding you in the wrong direction.

I've been here long enough to know that thread bumps or a repeat question indicates that you should tighten your boot straps.
