Under the Options tab > Performance: I auto rewrite my categories to use the prefix "Departments". Now, all of my categories are rewritten with a custom URL as well, so no where on our site does a cateogry have "/Departments/". If I wanted create a category that was hidden and non-indexable by search engines, would it be safe to "User-Agent: * Disallow: /Departments/ "> Would this work?

All of my cateogries have a custom URL, so I am not scared about accidently creating a new category without creating a custom URL for it. I simply want to keep a few categories hidden and non-indexable for marketing products.

If the category is not hidden in BV, you will probably have some weird side affects like the category showing in a breadcrumb. What you're proposing could prevent search engines from indexing the page, but remember that adding something to the robots.txt file does not guarantee that it won't be indexed.

How about?

Create a new master page, call it "Hidden-Category.master".

Add the <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow" /> to the header of the master page.

Set up a custom category template, call it "Hidden Category"

Have that category template use the Hidden-Category.master

......

Adds a second measure to try and thwart off the bots.

Notice that I'm using the "follow" as opposed to "nofollow". Can o' worms in terms of true effectiveness, but if there's any link juice on that page, it may still apply to the linked pages.

Not positive if any link juice applies to a pages linked from a page indicated as noindex though. I always say, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it...:)

That is actually what I was thinking about doing. Basically I have a lot of promotions that expire quarterly. I use a fancybox popup for the promo details and what products are eligible for the promo. Instead of manually designing each product, I could assign them to my hidden custom category and use the category as the popup in the grid format. I dont want any search engines indexing these pages because they do expire. Just a thought.
