If I do not select "Force Residential Addresses" in the shipping options for UPS, is it determined somehow by the address entered whether or not it is residential? Or is not selecting "Force Residential Addresses" the same as saying "Force Commercial Addresses"? I'm trying to not overcharge my commercial customers and not loose money on residential customers.


I'm switching to UPS from US Post Office since USPS is being goofy with my pickups latley. They are so unreliable. Still too expensive for international shipping, though. Sometimes 3x as much as USPS.

Addresses are assumed to be residential because it calculates higher shipper charges. The only way we don't set the residential flag is:

a) The "Force Residential Addresses" checkbox is off

AND

b) The customer enters a "Company Name" in the address field.


Otherwise we are always defaulting to residential.

Excellent. I think that is a good set-up. The only way I'll be out money is if someone puts something in the Company Name field but it turns out to be a residence. In that case, I assume UPS would initially charge me for Commercial Address (cheaper) and then later tack on a Residential Address fee. We'll see if that's how UPS plays it. Let me know if anyone can confirm that.

Yep, that's how UPS has handled it for other customers. If you end up with lots of extra charges just click on the "Force Residential" checkbox and you'll be good.

We have noticed changing merchant shipping habits since DHL left the US market. Most companies shipping to us are now using Fed Ex Ground.

We are a home based business and for our purposes we find USPS Priority Flat Rate not only the most convenient (Click and Ship, next day pick up at your door) but in many cases are substantially cheaper. And they don't care if we send it to an Igloo in AK or a Lawyers office in Manhattan. But of course your stuff does have to fit in the box.
