Being able to add -DS, -WHSL, -CANCELED, -RUSH, -OVERNIGHT ... to an order number would make it drop-dead-easy to see the status/urgency of an order at a glance.

11204-RUSH
11203
11202-CANCELLED
Better yet, the append could be automatically added as overnight shipping is chosen or if the order contains a drop-ship item. |

Mitch,
What you might want is an Order type of Order Memo that is displayed next to the Order Number.
You really don't want to change the Order Number of an order. Never. Ever. :)
However having a custom editable text displayed next to the order number would be nice.

It would be cool to have the ability to add an order prefix so the order number would be something like abc-1203. This can let you run multiple stores on the same authorize.net or other gateway account and not get the order numbers messed up.
