re: #1 - The SQL2005 username and password you enter must have permission to create a database on the server, or you can create the database before you run Site Manager.
re: #2 - What is the question?
re: #3 - Some general tips for installing on local Vista (some gleaned from other installation posts in this forum):
Before you run Site Manager...
1) Make sure you have "IIS 6 Compatibility mode" turned on in Vista. IIS 7 which ships with vista needs the compatibility mode to enable some features for the site manager.
When you run Site Manager...
2) Make sure you right-click and run the site manager program "as administrator" in Vista.
3) Change the Secure URL from https://localhost/... to http://localhost/...
4) Make sure the SQL2005 username and password have permission to create a database (or create the database before you start).
5) Make sure the SQL2005 username and password have permisson to create tables, stored procedures, functions, indexes, etc. in the target database. |

Keith,
I don't know how to write this without sounding like a pompous ass...
BV Commerce is designed to be run on a server, and the designers made a pretty big assumption...that the people installing the software would either be server administrators, developers with experience writing server applications, or have access to a server admin that can prepare the prerequisites and perform the install.
All of the how's in your list are pretty obvious to those 3 groups of people. If they don't seem obvious to you, then you may want to consider a different course of action.
Let me know if this post stinks and I'll delete it. |

Keith,
Andy's gotten it right. For now, just find an easier way to get up and running. Sign up with a host that knows the software inside-out. I use Resposio. I swear, you'll be running in 30 minutes if you follow the steps... Noah and Brendon at Resposio actually answer the phone and are incredibly generous with their time. Failures on 3 machines should tell you that you're swimming upstream.
After you've become familiar with it, move it, change it, load it onto where-ever you'd like. For now, I think you're trying to eat all of the food on the table in one sitting... slow down. It's a marathon, not a sprint. |

Keith,
We create and run sites on our local computers all the site. Also, the site manager can be installed on a server so "Create a site on this computer" could actually be a server.
It sounds like you are trying to minimize your updates over the wire and you could but it requires some technical tricks.
For example, you could create a store on your computer and one on the server. Using a combination of file synchronization/difference tools and SQL comparison tools you could periodically make sure your local file system and database are synchronized with a server one.
The main problem I see is that the synchronization process would require so many calls back and forth that you might just be better off working directly on the server.
Is there no way to get a higher speed connection where you are?

Yes you can run sites on local computer. I'm running my development site on a local computer and using it to get my CSS and Theme the way I want it. I then just FTP the files that i change to my live site that i pay for with AppliedI. Works great for me, as i can test everything i need to locally and then just upload the changes. |

I also run .. about 8 sites on my laptop. Different versions, some of customers, some of me, some for tests so it's easy to get it installed on your local machine. Here is a quick guide to get it installed on vista: http://www.acorns.com.au/bv/blog/?p=100Regards, Corneliu. |

Who is willing to take on the challenge? :skull: (It may increase sales) It will not be a speedy process (Dial in for upgrades on my end)
I am willing to start (again) from a fresh install of Vista Home Edition.
My expectations
<UL> * A local site on my PC.
* I need to be able to update my local (PC) files as needed then pubish whilst sleeping. </UL>
My downfalls
<UL> * not a novice PC user but sometimes slow
* DIALIN </UL> Regards
Keith

I don't think Vista home edition includes IIS which would be required to create sites locally. I think you need Vista Home Premium, Vista Business or Vista Ultimate to have IIS.

I certainly have Corneliu
I may sound like a knumbskull - I have built and maintained networks starting way back when (Windows 3.11), I have built applications (VB), built and have used Canada wide .mdb/mde vehicle maintenance programs, built many web pages (html) have built a web sites utilizing ASP.net and have them working on my "Local" pc.. However this installation has me stumped.
What I wish to do is start from a basic installation of Vista Premium - I will install fresh on a PC, then go through a step by step process via the bulletin board. For whoever wishes to take up the challenge it will be a once or twice a day visit to the forum, due to my new found dialin restrictions.
I think this would also help others that are trying to install the trial on a local SQL and have it work.
Is anyone up for the challenge..
Regards Keith
