Wondering how we can display marketing offers on the product category page.

IE if a product has 25% off or a buy one get one free, I'd like to be able to display it on the page that shows a list of products.

Ideas?

Put it in the description. The description shows up at the top of the category page. Images, links and html are allowed there.

What I mean is I want to display it under the products so the original price is 'crossed out' and the sale price will appear below. I do not want to have to re-enter any text in the product's description too, if this is what you're saying.

Essentialy, I want to be able to look at the list of products, and find out whether a given product has a promotion (Just like it happens for items in the cart).

Does this make sense?

So the main question is: is it possible to process the offers against the products.?

No, not OOTB. I'd be a slow-motion nightmare if every product loaded onto a category page had to be filtered against all of the sales/offers which might or might not apply, as in a 'New to this Site!'. Some cats have dozens of products and some sites might have dozens of offers.

It's arguably more strange that you can't tell a customer that a product is on sale until they've added it to their cart.

Regarding the slow motion nightmare: Output caching on a catalog would be an easy solution to overcome this.

Ok, so it's not there out of the box How would you approach this issue, if a store wants to make customers aware of their on sale and promoted products?

I like your idea about promotions appearing and I've mentioned this for future development. If it's a free shipping item, give us a little placeholder to have an icon appear.

one thing that we're doing to combat the lack of OOTB is adding flags to the images themselves. It adds time and overhead but if you're not changing it up too much or looking at thousands of items to be updated, give it a shot. It definitely draws focus to the items you want to sell. (insite marketing)

I had aram @ avecome do this to my site. It looks for certain "sales" under the marketing tab. If the product is listed in a sale, it will then display an "on sale" image. I also had aram create a new dynamic category criteria so I can show all my products on sale in a category dynamically.

*Just note that this is still a work in progress. The onsale image can change, as well as placement. I've created it sort of as a place holder until i can really spend some design time on it.

What I did with that was have aram create an extra field on the product edit page. This extra field is for promotions on the cat and product page. I didnt want it to show the marketing name because i wanted more creative freedom over what is shown to the customer. My products on sale might have multiple sales or promotions i want to show to the customer. PLUS... The extra field is just HTML. I used a HTML list format for my promos (all the green checkmarks you see on the page).

Note that this is not for anyone who doesn't know any code or html. I simply need a cost effective way to show prodcuts on sale on the promos with that product. Putting an extra HTML field worked great for a un-ordered list
