Can an cross sell item ONLY show in the cross sell area and not on the rest of the site?

I have recently added one of my products as a cross sell item and I am wondering if I can make a duplicate version of this item (that is slightly different) that ONLY shows in the cross sell area?

Depending on how you set up your layout, most likely, if you do not assign the product to a category, it wont display on the site. And you should still be able to add that product as a cross sell item for another product. |

But the product will show up in search results even if its not associated to a category. |
